Facebook Says Some of Its Services Are Having Issues Again (theverge.com) 32

Instagram has been experiencing issues for many of us here at The Verge, but it turns out that the problem might be broader than that, according to a statement from Facebook. From a report: "We're aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products," Facebook said in a tweet. "We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience."

Why does anyone here care about whether Facebook is up or down? It's not as if educated, intelligent, rational people use Facebook... do they?

No, we don't. We just like the schadenfreude.

      • Sad and no reason to doubt it's true, whether it is "too many websites are linked to Facebook" or "Facebook is too big".

I'm certainly hoping that Facebook doesn't get rewarded for the speculative and spectacular incompetence, the way the big banks got rewarded after the YUGE splash of the mortgage crash in 2007-8. A lot of rich bastards certainly deserved to go to jail for that one, but didn't. Instead, they came out bigger and "safer" than ever.

So how many Senators has Facebook bought so far? Or should we

No, but our family sells a ton of used stuff on Marketplace. It's much better than Kijiji or eBay, and this year didn't have a garage sale...
    • No, but if I couldn't read it here, I wouldn't even know that FB is having issues.

I was already wondering, some coworkers were a lot more obnoxious today... Can we get FB back online please? I need to get work done and the constant interruptions really cut into my productivity!

    • Apparently nobody does negative caching anymore so when Facebook DNS goes down the clients hammer the DNS infrastructure with a 30x traffic spike.

      • Interesting, why donâ(TM)t they do negative caching anymore?
        • Many tools avoid it because they seek instant service once the DNS is valid again. Negative caching is problematic if your services is frequently interrupted for any reason, such as switching wifi access points when traveling, high local traffic, or delays connecting a VPN after pausing for lunch.

I know lots of fellow parents who use it to keep grandparents and other family in touch with their young grandkids. What are the alternatives? You could just store pictures+videos on a shared drive somewhere, but then you'd miss out on the social interactions and questions and discussions that are just as important as the pictures+videos. You could use email but then you'd have find another place to keep photos+videos and keep them in sync which is a pain and beyond the abilities of most non-techies, and it

Imagine a world where everyone had a personal communication device with them nearly all the time...or a car.

    • Facebook? No. WhatsApp? Absolutely. It's a critical communications medium in my country.

ALL of it's services are having issues. And have been for a long time. The only permanent cure is to simply stop using it. But I suspect that enough people are sufficiently addicted to it that all will be forgiven and they will return to their "news" feed.

I would lump in Facebook with tobacco, sugar, junk food, porn and alcohol. In small doses they can be tolerable but any amount of overuse leads to problems. As with all the other items on the list the best strategy is to never use them at all and avoid any

That is what happens when your motto is "Move fast and break things." Things get broken.

  • glad Putie pulled this off. Slick work.

  • So, they've now put an international agreement into place that will (eventually) limit the tax-dodging ability of huge corporations.

Now they need a follow-on agreement: Prevent companies from getting so huge in the first place. Above a certain size, acquisitions should be completely forbidden. Facebook should not own Instagram, WhatsApp, and all these other companies. [wikipedia.org] Many of those were potential competition, now safely absorbed.

Overflow on /dev/null, please empty the bit bucket.
