Instagram is Now Blocked in Russia (techcrunch.com) 97

Russia followed through on its threat to block Meta-owned Instagram on Monday, cutting off access to tens of millions of users in the country. From a report: Instagram is popular in Russia. It's Meta's second most popular app there, according to data from Sensor Tower, behind ubiquitous messaging service WhatsApp. The app has been installed 166 million times across the Russian App Store and Google Play since 2014, making it three times as popular as Facebook. After Russian censor Roskomnadzor announced that the government would restrict access to the app following a 48-hour "transition period," Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri condemned Russia's actions, which will affect 80 million people in the country.

  • Honestly, without instagram, facebook, and other social media they will up their productivity to the point where they will take over the world. We need to start airdropping Starlink dishes into Russia immediately.

According to polls a majority of Russians support the invasion of Ukraine. It shows the power of propaganda and control of information.

  • Everything Russians need is now on Putingram. You can post all of the pro-Russia pictures you want*, plus incriminating pictures of Ukrainian 'nazis'. Putingram, only best social media for the strongest country.

    * Not posting pro-Russia pictures is a crime, phones will be searched

  • Russians can still watch Tucker Carlson [theguardian.com]!

    • ...Mother Jones, a progressive magazine, said it had obtained memos produced by the Russian department of information and telecommunications support.

      Someone's jealous.
    • Tucker and Trump comments were a gold mine to Russian propaganda efforts - almost like they were bribed or somehow motivated to make those comments.

Treasonshit Tucker has been on the russian take for a long while. Fox's alliance with Trump was notable given the numerous ties [washingtonpost.com] that Trump's businesses [foreignpolicy.com] have to russian money, and Fox's similar [nytimes.com] connections [rollingstone.com].

Tucker is going to be parroting Russian propaganda "word for word" [independent.co.uk] because that's what Russia is paying him to do.

  • In United Soviet Socialist Europe, government blocks private companies. In United Soviet Socialist Russia, it is totally the opposite.
  • No more Instagram? I'm jealous!

I'd be happy it it disappeared here, and would be ecstatic if US 'news' articles would stop citing random Twitter comments as legit article research and evidence we'd make some real progress.

Oh an 'influencers' can we do something about that nonsense :)

  • Given the speed at which technology moves these days, it's remarkable how long it took for Instagram to get blockchained. If they want to keep up, they had better get metaversed in NFTs pretty soon, too!

  • Block access to OnlyFans.
