Google Hangouts is Shutting Down in November 24

After sunsetting Google Hangouts for Workspace users in February, Google's now beginning the process of migrating free, personal Hangouts users to Chat. In an announcement posted to its blog, Google says people who still use the Hangouts mobile app will see a prompt to move to Chat. From a report: As for users who use Hangouts in Gmail on the web, Google says it won't start prompting users to make the switch to Chat until July. Hangouts will remain usable on its desktop site until November, and Google says it will warn users "at least one month" in advance before it starts pointing the Hangouts site to Chat.

When you hear about some technology that is changing or getting shutdown or whatnot. And it doesn't affect you in the least. Seriously. It's a really nice feeling.

I agree, since I don't use Hangouts, but let this be a warning to all the younguns who swallow whatever comes their way. There's no such thing as free lunch. Facebook and Twitter are one thing and Google is another thing. The primary functions of Facebook and Twitter are just what they do. They're not going to abandon those models. Google, OTOH, has a foot in many little things out there, so there's a high possibility that Google might pull the rug out from underneath your feet (cough, pay for Gmail, cough, as well as list of 100 things Google discontinued) while other companies may not to do so as easily as Google can. Now everything shiny is a good thing. [thewindowsclub.com]

      • Pay for Gmail? You're saying that Google may at any time start charging users to have a Gmail account? OK, lets think about this...

You need to have a google account just to setup a new android phone, because you will need to be able to use all the google apps, and the appstore. I don't think that the carriers that sell the handsets would appreciate another barrier to selling the phones. Plus, Google has to compete with Apple and the iPhone. If Apple lets you create an Apple ID for free to use with your new
        • GP was probably referencing the news that Google is now charging for business gmail accounts. Probably won't happen with consumer accounts, for reasons you stated, but the point is, what choice would you have if they did? Pay up or change your e-mail.

      • I have no idea what the fuzz is about.. i have been an active Google Hangouts feature since they started.. and still had support for xmpp..
When time came to switch to chat i simply switched.. it is literally zero change.. and compatible with all existing contacts.. and you still have your whole chat history.. who cares how it is called ðYââ(TM)ï and whether you tap the Chat icon or Hangouts icon..

  • Another service joins the half-baked Google project cemetery.

  • Frankly, I've used it for quite a while but I won't miss it much. I guess I'll go back to good old ICQ or Trillian.

  • I completely forgot hangouts was a thing.

  • How many times did we hear that before ? o.0 ?

  • It would only be news if they kept something going.

They shut down more services than my geezer body does.

  • I mean, chat is like ICQ on steroids, but it's 25years ago.. Not having voice/videocalls is plain stupid. I guess meetings is very good for meetings, but most of my calls are unscheduled, and my spouse have video calls with me when she wonder if she should by X or Y in the store. It's not even a valid excuse that google want to go B2B as most of my workcalls over teams are unscheduled. For me, chat is just a vastly inferior product compared to almost everything else. Maybe even go back to ICQ (But I don't t
  • Who wants to set up the betting pool for when Google will kill off this chat app?

One of the problems with Google is with their management and incentive structure. There's huge benefits to people starting new exciting projects, but not much for those who revive or fix old projects. Won't be long before Chat is killed of and some new exciting thing takes it's place. It's frustrating for people who try to use their services. May as well just switch to Apple, 10 years from now they'll probably still have Facetime, messages, etc.

Shocked, I tell you! Absolutely shocked! ICQ is still around. IRC is still around sorta. I am sure somewhere USENET lives on in some limited fashion. With all the android phones out there they cant keep hangouts as a core app? Is Google Calendar and Gmail at risk now? Sometimes you run an app to keep the base as cost of doing business. Is Duo safe anymore? Or does google not give a shit about competing with Facetime?

ICQ, IRC, and usenet aren't popular as they used to be though.

well neither is the Notes app on my iPhone I talk to people all the time that never use it, didnt know it was there, didnt care when I told them about it. I use it all the time. Its one of those core apps that came with ios when iOS was positioning itself to be the next Palm type device. Decide to do an at home project? take measurements and jot them down in Notes before heading off to Lowes or Home Depot. Making a quick list of things to pick up? Dont want to forget that discount code for the point-of-sal
  • Google announced that personal Hangouts was going away and everybody should move to Duo or Allo instead.

What happened is they moved to Facebook and Signal and WhatsApp and Snapchat.

Good job, Google. Way to expose the implementation.

Does nobody there not know that eBay used to be yellow?

  • He was a character who often mentioned the name changes of ultra trendy clubs he'd go to.
Hangouts becomes Chat, Chat can become Psst!, Psst!, can become an icon of a winking eye and a bobbing head signalling for attention, and that can become the sound of a whistle.

  • Users are being hung out to dry.
