Google Meet Meets Duo Meet, With Meet in Duo But Duo Isn't Going Into Meet (theverge.com) 35

In June, Google announced that it's bringing the features of Meet into the Duo app -- and that transformation begins today. Google isn't technically getting rid of either app; Duo's getting rebranded as Meet with the features from both apps, and Meet's staying Meet. From a report: Yes, it sounds pretty confusing, but by the end of this process, there will be just two apps: "Meet Original" (the standard Meet app that will eventually get phased out) and the new Meet that combines both Meet and Duo. The combined app will let you conduct both group and one-on-one calls as well as hold meetings.

  • And other fun tongue twisters.

Seriously, writers must be incredibly bored to come up with titles like this for articles.

    Such a dumpster fire
  • I tried to read the summary, but it was incredibly difficult to do so as my inner editor was lying bleeding out on the floor after reading that headline. WTF? That's the most word-salad title I've seen on an article in a while. I'm seriously shaken by it. Shaken, not stirred.

Holy fuck. I think ya dun broked my brain.

Don't care. Fix Hangouts Now "Chat." Make at least as good as the old Hangouts was, please.

  • Why is Google so terrible at this? Next year they'll announce a new app to replace this called "Hangouts".

Since being taken over by the CFR Google has been restricted to Limited Hangouts, so they've had to create Chat and Talk and Duo and Allo and Meet and all the other ones I've forgotten or never heard about.

Its so bizarre.. We actually use these, because they work across Android/iOS/PC devices, but it's difficult to keep up.

Hangouts we could text, voice, video chat, and it it was great. I'm not even sure what app I'm supposed to use for what anymore and I just hope they don't cancel it before I figure it out.

Don't worry, Google will wait until just after you figure it out to discontinue whatever app you decided to use.

    • This is hearsay, but I recall a comment previously from a Google employee (supposedly) that mentioned how their product teams are run. It's basically a bunch of small independent groups that try to one-up each other with better/cleaner features from a hastily thrown together codebase that no one has any intention of maintaining long term. In other words, they're trying to let internal competition naturally deliver the best product which requires constant replacements of what they already have.

... until it, too, gets killed. [killedbygoogle.com]

  • Is this the yearly chat app from Google? Seriously, is there anyone using this crap, knowing it will get cancelled in 6 months?
    • First- you're right. Google is going to blow this big time.

It reminds me of Skype. Microsoft had Skype, then they added 'Skype for Business', and they were incompatible.

The second time someone in my organization was on the wrong Skype, and unable to get into a conference, we had to dump Skype because it was too complicated.

And slightly un-related, but if you can figure out the different versions of Adobe Lightroom, and what the names mean, you must be a genius. Because that program suffers from the same

  • Google Meet?
    Google Hangouts?
    Google Duo?
    Google Chat?
How many times are they going to rename the same thing?
I'm going to switch back to iPhone because facetime and messages will still be called the same thing.

I should add that I've tried really hard to get all my friends and work associates using Google products, but it's hard when nobody can remember what it's fucking even called

This is part of why we don't use any of this crap. We still use Facebook Messenger. It works on *all* mobile platforms, works on the desktop, works in a web browser... works everywhere.

  • How many times they will reinvent the same thing, if they used evolution approach and open source protocols they would be way ahead of everyone.
  • Can't help but hear "Google Meat" when said out loud. Not too far fetched, they really have their hand in everything! Google Meetings I think may be a better name for the service.
  • Who hacked Google and stole their chat app marketing strategy for this story title? Well done, msmash.

  • So I put a videocall app in your videocall app so you can videocall while making videocalls

  • Just had the opportunity to make use of some Google videoconfererencing in browser the other day, it's the only videoconference software I've used in a long time that just outright died in the middle of a conversation, I had to re-open in a different browser.

Used Zoom and other things in browsers before, no issues or lag. Googles got choppy about 10 minutes in then cut off a few minutes after.

Google should not embed Meet in Duo or Duo in Meet or Meet In Meet (btw kudos to the headline writer), they should

  • Really glad they're ditching the 'Duo' name because there's a popular two-factor app called Duo and it's been a real problem getting random users to download THAT instead of Google's app.
  • Google is good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

It takes courage to see Hangouts deployed on every Android device, lots of people using it happily, and eventually decide that having so many users was unacceptable, deprecating the popular communication platform, create low quality products to act as sort-of replacements, then get behind a carrier-driven upgrade to SMS as the "solution".
