OpenAI Will Remove Its Waitlist for DALL-E, Giving Anyone Immediate Access (washingtonpost.com) 30

An anonymous reader shares a report:Since the research lab OpenAI debuted the latest version of DALL-E in April, the AI has dazzled the public, attracting digital artists, graphic designers, early adopters, and anyone in search of online distraction. The ability to create original, sometimes accurate, and occasionally inspired images from any spur-of-the-moment phrase, like a conversational Photoshop, has startled even jaded internet users with how quickly AI has progressed. Five months later, 1.5 million users are generating 2 million images a day. On Wednesday, OpenAI said it will remove its waitlist for DALL-E, giving anyone immediate access.

The introduction of DALL-E has triggered an explosion of text-to-image generators. Google and Meta quickly revealed that they had each been developing similar systems, but said their models weren't ready for the public. Rival start-ups soon went public, including Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, which created the image that sparked controversy in August when it won an art competition at the Colorado State Fair.

The cat's out of the bag.

While DALL-E does some things a bit better, Standard Diffusion is free, doesn't have ridiculous TOS limitations, won't ban you for what it thinks are "wrong" topics, doesn't take credits to use, and can be improved and adjusted by the community.

Technically SD has license restrictions that prohibit "unsafe content" and has technical restrictions to try and police this, but they can readily be removed since they provide the model. And the model is the real game changer here: millions of programmers and other technically-inclined folks now have an AI capability they didn't just a few weeks ago. (Billions of people having a new artistic capability is merely the cherry on top.) It's a huge amount of potential that's been released.

Maybe OpenAI will take it one step further and live up to their name. Release the model!

    • I searched for "standard diffusion" and didn't get any AI image generation results, not on the first page at least.

They still want an non VOIP phone number. I don't give out my cell number out to any business beside my bank. Since Dall-e doesn't charge to use their service, they are very likely to sell you phone number. Remember; if a company isn't charging for something, then you are mostly likely the product they are selling.
    • Don't you have a burner phone or SIM? One of the cheapest privacy investments you can have. Let's you snag a GMail account as well.
  • The last time I tried to sign up for OpenAI's tools a couple months ago, it required entering a phone number that supports Short Message Service (SMS) and then keying in a 6-digit code in a text message received at that number. A lot of people still have phones that don't do SMS, such as landlines, voice-only service over the mobile network branded as "wireless home phone", and VoIP. Does OpenAI still require SMS?

    • Yeah, there's literally hundreds of octogenarians who won't be able to sign up for this.

Many modern landline provider utilize some text-to-speech service that reads out SMS that are sent to your landline number.
Have someone with a phone send you an SMS onto your landline. Or check with your landline provider to find out if they offer such a service for free but haven't activated it by default.

Tried today from my cell phone. No message was received.

Unlikely. From the product page for AT&T's current wireless home phone gateway device [att.com]: "This device can't be used with wireless messaging features, home security systems, or fax machines." The "About Your Device" page [att.com] agrees. I'd port the number to a cell phone in order to join this century, but then the house number wouldn't ring both upstairs and downstairs.

I guess I could instead upgrade my cell phone from a pay-as-you-go plan intended for occas

Sounds like they gated that "standard feature" (in my eyes) behind an additional subscription wall.

In any case though, if you just need to receive an SMS, a pay-as-you-go contract for your cellphone should suffice, because receiving an SMS usually does not produce additional costs on your end that you can't control (abuse potential would be enormous given all the text message scams). But given the fact that you seeming
    • Who the hell still has phones that don't support SMS?

That said, if I knew about alternatives like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, I would've never jumped through all the bullshit DALLE wants. So check those out.

The results from my prompts haven't been very impressive (rabid weasel gloyhole, hydra pussy, etc) with a fair bit of repetition in how it seems to try to blend things (like by removing eyes and leaving gaping holes serial killer style). I now see it has movie ads on it which it didn't a couple weeks ago when I last used it. Still it's fun for a few tries if you haven't.
