Facebook Held Back on Naming Cambridge Analytica in 2017 (reuters.com) 17

Mark Zuckerberg considered saying in a 2017 speech that Facebook was looking into "organizations like Cambridge Analytica," according to details from a deposition of him by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. From a report: But he decided to remove reference to the political consultancy which harvested data on millions of Facebook users ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a previously unreported move that could add fuel to shareholder allegations that Zuckerberg and other executives hid information from the public about one of its biggest privacy scandals. When Meta executives learned of issues related to Cambridge Analytica, and how they responded, is central to lawsuits in California and Delaware in which shareholders allege the executives breached fiduciary duties and consumers allege mishandling of their private information.

    • Well yes, but certainly he's willing to testify directly in front of Congress on live television about how very sorry he is for this scandal that has damaged Facebook's reputation and how these kind of mistakes will not happen under *his* watch in the future. And to trust him.

      • Days like that are probably the worst part of having to do Mark Zuckerberg's job, but don't worry. Trust me, he'll soon get over it after a spa day or maybe even two.

We get it. You are stuck in 2017.

Look, you voluntarily gave your information to facebook. Facebook sold access like everyone with a fucking brain knew would happen.

I literally don't give a fuck when a slimeball like Zuckerberg and crew took the most obvious action with their data.

I frankly would be surprised if this weren't to happen.

Newsflash #2. All of the data harvesting platforms continue to do the same thing to this very day. Insert Pikachu face when you hear about this new app called Tiktok.

"Look at all the other people doing it!" This excuse is annoying, and doesn't actually excuse the activity.

He really should name the analytic company that is now doing what Cambridge Analytica was doing as well. Otherwise its lame whataboutism- She was dressed so provocatively stuff

Yes, people should be wary of what they post online, but few of their users knew just how far politically inclined organizations would go.

        They do now.

        Your naivety misses the point.

The strategy is to focus on this one time in 2017, pay a little fine, declare no wrong doing, and keep on trucking along.

This is endemic to large online platforms and there is too much money at stake for it to ever go away.

This leaves only 2 choices. You can use the service with the implicit consent this is going to happen (because it always will, legal or not) or don't signup at all.

In the case of Cambridge Analytica, they were able to gain access to information that they should not have had access to. So I think your excusing Facebook for this is pretty lame.

Let's look at the first line of the Wikipedia article on the scandal:
"In the 2010s, personal data belonging to millions of Facebook users was collected without their consent by British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica"
Further down in the article, we have:
"In July 2019, it was announced that Facebook was to be fined $5 billion by the Federal Trade Commission due to its privacy violations. "

We are still suffering with the results of what they did, and as well as making sure it doesn't happen again, the more people understand how they were manipulated, the sooner we can get to fixing it.

The tide is turning against brexit. The majority haven't wanted it for years, now it's just a question of getting enough people to want to undo it too.

I'm guessing you care about made-up interference the last election.
