Google Invests $300 Million in AI Startup Anthropic (ft.com) 7

Google has invested about $300mn in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, making it the latest tech giant to throw its money and computing power behind a new generation of companies trying to claim a place in the booming field of "generative AI." From the report: The terms of the deal, through which Google will take a stake of around 10 per cent, requires Anthropic to use the money to buy computing resources from the search company's cloud computing division, according to three people familiar with the arrangement. Google's move highlights the influence that a small number of Big Tech companies have assumed over other companies working on AI, which need access to cloud computing platforms to handle the giant AI models developed by groups such as Anthropic. The search company's investment also echoes the $1bn cash-for-computing investment that Microsoft made in OpenAI three years ago.

  • Like Myspace, Yahoo, MapQuest, Napster, AOL, and World of Warcraft, Google had its time in the sun. The information age is over. The knowledge age has begun. The crappy 'find it yourself from a bag of links' BS of the early 21'st century is about to be replaced with a personal virtual assistant... with an IQ of 200 and infinite knowledge.

Google is toast... Especially once the AI starts to incorporate subtle advertising that nobody can really detect.

The thing is that Google has exactly 1 product that they built themselves that went anywhere - search. Everything else was purchased. Google is basically bankrupt in terms of new ideas but they do think an awful lot of themselves.

Indeed. The positive contributions of Google are near zero. You are mistaken about their primary product. The primary product of Google is ads, i.e. wasting your time. Talk about evil.

      • Sounds familiar.

Greedy people in advertising are not that bright neither are the companies that buy their wares. You promise them more more more and they can't help but buy ads. Many people avoid ads, detest ads, want to limit ads, will only view if you pay them to. This smells of a product you have to hang a pork chop on to get the dog to play with it. They are not happy until everyone talks about their ads (even to hate them), they are not that bright. Google will be fine, there's more stupid with money coming along eve

Google will be fine, there's more stupid with money coming along every day.

And that is it. Google really has nothing of value to offer, but is very successful in creating the illusion that things are different. And they will continue to be successful at that.
