Zuckerberg Says Meta Wants To 'Introduce AI Agents To Billions of People' (theverge.com) 37

Meta sees "an opportunity to introduce AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful," CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors Wednesday. From a report: While he was vague about how exactly Meta will add generative AI to its apps, Zuckerberg gave the most detailed preview yet during the company's earnings call for the first quarter of this year, when it reported $28.6 billion in revenue and a record 2 billion daily users of the Facebook app, beating Wall Street's estimates. Meta's profit for the quarter was $5.7 billion, a 24 percent decrease from the same time last year. "We're exploring chat experiences in WhatsApp and Messenger, visual creation tools for posts in Facebook and Instagram and ads, and over time video and multi-modal experiences as well," Zuckerberg said on the earnings call. "I expect that these tools will be valuable for everyone from regular people to creators to businesses. For example, I expect that a lot of interest in AI agents for business messaging and customer support will come once we nail that experience. Over time, this will extend to our work on the metaverse, too, where people will much more easily be able to create avatars, objects, worlds, and code to tie all of them together."

Just name it "Skynet" and be done with it.

When I read the headline and scanned the synopsis, my first thought was "Agent Smith" from the Matrix....

    Hmm, Meta ? Matrix?

    It's close.

    • This makes Meta sound way cooler and more interesting than it actually is. If owned the rights to the Matrix I'd sic lawyers on you for brand devaluation.
  • Someone needs to introduce a boot to Mark's head [wikipedia.org].

Now we're not just the product, but we humans are training data for the AI product?

No. I am not creating anything in your trash products.
    • Meta sees "an opportunity to employ AI agents to collect salable personal data on billions of people..."

      Fixed that lead-in line...
I'm not interested in giving Zuckerberg any of my information until he starts paying me for it.

  • This isn't news because all the big and medium web and tech companies are promising wonderful magic AI/GPT products. It would be PHB-sacrilege not to.

    • Generative AI does make a lot of sense for building out a VR environment though. (If only a VR environment were something that needed to be built.) Slashdotters need interior design [amazonaws.com], too!

There's already procedural generative techniques for 3D models. The focus should be on the participants (hopefully mostly real people), not art anyhow.

If you let AI do too much, you'll get embarrassing snafus that ruin your cred. And too many bot images look like stuff melted a bit.

It may be a sometimes fun whimsical addition, but it's not likely a lone savior for their VR.

  • ...Zuck just doesn't know it yet (or doesn't admit)

  • What a twat. We already get to see AI in action every time he speaks. What more could he have to offer?

I welcome the day that I can pretend to be involved in what people say on Facebook and be polite about it while not actually expending any effort in doing so.

Of course the ultimate outcome of this is that we will all have our agents talking to each other and we can back to our lives. And meta can collect data about what our AI agents are doing, win, win.

  • Seriously Zuckerberg is so desperate to copy the competition that he is doing so even for features that are netting the competition a wave of 1 star reviews. I that what he wants for his product?

I mean.... it's Facebook. It's not like the star rating systems go into negative numbers...

this might be true. Is this why Zuck is so keen on his metaverse: so he can go and live there and everything will appear as his delusions say ?

    • by gweihir ( 88907 )

Probably. Note that he is not the only rich fuck that has lost most of his connection to reality.

He's being vague because all he really knows how to do is put together a college hookup app.

No, he's being vague because he doesn't want to explicitly say that this AI stuff will fuck over his users even more than it is fucking them over right now.
The AI will mostly be used to analyze behavior, extract personal information from that and generate ads from the information. It is just a tool to extract more money from the users.

It's very obvious, because that has always been Facebooks no1 business, mining data.

That ChatGPT has exploded in popularity comes as a surprise to no one, and ofc Meta wants in, in fact - ChatGPT is ALREADY an personal assistant we either have for free or pay a little fee for (I'd rather pay a fee and keep it private, than sell out to facebook, Meta...anyway).

Meta just wants to mine the valuable private conversations that most users have with ChatGPT. I can literally see Zuckerberg frothing mouth right now because this is an obvious data goldmine. People are no strangers to searching with their innermost secret questions, and even more so with ChatGPT which is something that reddit users have provided evidence for in droves.

But I think they will fall flat really fast because there's a reason Facebook died out and Meta is flopping, it's just not the VR alone, it's the fact anyone with a pulse now know how evil the company is, anything remotely connected to Zuckerbergs company and his cronies will be a people repellant every time they start something new.

  • He wants to harvest more data more efficently with no privacy concerns,
  • Train an AI on your likes, comments and posts. This way you can relax and read a book while the AI posts, comments and likes in your place.
  • "Meta sees "an opportunity to market the Product of AI agents to billions of dumb fucks in ways that will be profitable and profitable," CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors..."

Fixed that...for those who failed history class.

  • "Zuckerberg says Meta wants in inflict AI agents on billions of people"
  • At the end he is still trying to tie it into the Metaverse. I can't believe he hasn't given up on something that time and time again has been proven that nobody is interested in it whatsoever.
