Nvidia, MediaTek Partner on Connected Car Technology (reuters.com) 16

Nvidia and MediaTek on Monday said they will collaborate on technology to power advanced vehicle infotainment systems that can stream video or games or interact with drivers using artificial intelligence. From a report: Under the agreement, announced at the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, MediaTek will integrate an Nvidia graphic processing unit chiplet and Nvidia software into the system-on-chips it supplies to automakers for infotainment displays. MediaTek systems using Nvidia software would be compatible with automated driving systems based on Nvidia technology, the companies said. Dashboard displays could show the environment around the vehicle, while cameras would monitor the driver.

"The automotive industry needs strong companies that can work with the industry for decades at a time," Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang told a news conference in Taipei, pointing to a long product cycle for car makers. "The quality, strength and positions of our two companies could give the automotive industry partners that they can build their companies on," he said, adding the partnership would provide chips that can power "every single segment of a car".

  • Streaming video and games. Hey, the damn car can drive itself, amirite?

    • All the more reason why I say the whole "freedom" bit when it comes to driving is a pointless claim / argument. They don't actually *want* to drive. They want to be chauffeured instead. As they are too busy messing with their phones / infotainment systems (which should be illegal IMO) / etc. to bother with actual driving.
  • ... the partnership would provide chips that can power "every single segment of a car".

They'll eventually replace the windshield in favor of a "safer" graphics display and we'll have to continually upgrade our Nvidia cards to get better views the of reality around us. (sigh) :-)

    • I just want AR HUD linked to an imaging system with LIDAR that can tell me distances and closing times. Not with an actual number, or at least not all the time, but first and foremost with warnings. Time to overtake at speed maybe, if it looks like I'm passing someone? Etc.

      • I also would like a HUD linked to LIDAR as I am keen to know how good the LIDAR and computing are at spotting, identifying and tracking things in real time compared to ancient meatbag sensors/synapses.
If anyone can point me to video showing real world comparisons, that would be great.

  • ...opt out of being "info-tained" in my car?
Sounds like a dog-whisle for advertising opportunities....
