Meta's First Generative AI Feature Will Be AI Stickers In Messenger 15

Meta is planning to introduce AI-generated stickers on Messenger, allowing users to create stickers based on text prompts. The Verge reports: During a companywide meeting today that The Verge listened to, Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta's vice president of AI, told employees that the company will leverage its image generation model to let users create stickers based on text prompts. Employees will begin testing the feature internally before it's made available to the public. "With AI-generated stickers, our users can have infinitely more options for self-expression, cultural representations, and even trend relevance," Al-Dahle says. "Of course, stickers are just the tip of the iceberg."

Al-Dahle adds that the company is also "working on AI models that are going to transform any image you want in any way you want." That includes doing things like "changing the aspect ratio of your picture" or turning a picture of a corgi "into a painting."

  • How cringy.

  • ... if you add a "oh lord" then the AI will transform it into a photo of... ... Lord Voldemort or... ... Sauron ("Lord" of the Rings) or... ... your landlord...

  • This is where the slippery slide begins.
All your creative channels are replaced with consumptive channels filled with AI output.

    • This is all very fitting. Bullshit-generating AI by a bullshit "metaverse" company is used to create bullshit stickers for "self-expression, cultural representations". We live in a bullshit society and this is, in the words of the facebook guy they quoted, "just the tip of the iceberg."

    • Even worse, they likely will not even need humans to consume all the slew of generative AI output eventually. Bots can do it faster and without the need to eat or sleep. Even the most committed social media addict will not be able to compete with generative user bots. Just bots interacting with other bots endlessly.

Dead internet theory was right all along.

  • They failed to mention (autocorrect: minion / monetize and I am not making this up) that all stickers will interpolate between Zuckerberg's face and an image of a boiled potato aa a minimum computational effort cost savings. They will then sell carbon credits from that.
  • Almost enough to make me sign up so I can witness the carnage first hand. So many grandmothers will learn the true meaning of goatse on this glorious day. But nah.
  • My, how we've progressed! Clerics used to argue about the number of angels that could dance on the head of a pin. Now tech giants are using AI, not merely to argue about such fanciful trivia, but to create an absolute miasma of equivalent shit that's getting harder to avoid.

The fact that a thing CAN be done is in no way a sufficient indication that it SHOULD be done.

  • What the unholy fuck? Are we five? (Not) stickers? Not even actual tactile stickers. I think my heart is slowing. Very slow now.
  • Just why?
