Google Assistant To Get an AI Makeover (axios.com) 16

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Axios: Google plans to overhaul its Assistant to focus on using generative AI technologies similar to those that power ChatGPT and its own Bard chatbot, according to an internal e-mail sent to employees Monday and seen by Axios. Google says some work on the revamped Assistant has begun, starting with the mobile version of the product. As part of the move, Google is reorganizing the teams that work on Assistant. The company said in the email it's making a small number of layoffs in conjunction with the shift. The move will involve eliminating dozens of jobs, Axios is told, out of the thousands of employees who work on the Assistant "We remain deeply committed to Assistant and we are optimistic about its bright future ahead," Google VP Peeyush Ranjan and director of product Duke Dukellis wrote in the e-mail.

"We remain deeply committed to Assistant and we are optimistic about its bright future ahead,"

They say that about all their products right up until it is taken around the back and a single shot is heard.

I have a couple google home devices at home. They get dumber every day. Things that used to work:

    * When you open a recipe and say "next", it used to go to the next step in the recipe. Now it does a Google search for the word "next", recipes are pretty much useless.
    * When I say "ok Google, make it cooler", it used to lower the temperature on the thermostat, not anymore. Now I have to say "ok google set the temperature between 68 and 73"
    * The devices randomly disconnect from the wifi and say "hang on while I connect to the internet", but never do. I have to unplug it and plug it in again.

There are many other commands that it should understand but doesn't.

This. All time this. I wish I knew how to fix this ... been searching forever for a fix. Anyone have any ideas?

    • This is what happens when the original team get promoted for launching, and then goes off to do the next thing.
  • I have both an Echo and a Google Home/Nest/Whatever they're calling it this week and they are annoyingly inconsistent. The same radio station I play every day when I wake up (KCRW has an awesome music show called Morning Becomes Eclectic, check it out!) randomly gets misheard and plays god knows what. If this fixes this then that's awesome but I'm not holding my breath, otherwise it's just another crap shoot to see if it gets it right today.

At bedtime "lights out" sometimes gets misheard as "lights on" and

  • "Set a reminder to do laundry at 6pm."

I keep getting reminders from my google account days after I set them. Meanwhile, the day they are relevant, the alarm never notifies me. Weird how they changed it. (I forget what bs they gave, but the answer is probably cost cutting on assistant to pay for this bit.)
