Microsoft Shuts Down Cortana App On Windows 11

Microsoft is rolling out a new update for Windows 11 that disables the digital assistant Cortana. The Verge reports: If you attempt to launch Cortana on Windows 11 you'll now be met with a notice about how the app is deprecated and a link to a support article on the change. Microsoft is now planning to end support for Cortana in Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams Display, and Microsoft Teams Rooms "in the fall of 2023." Surprisingly, Cortana inside Outlook mobile "will continue to be available," according to Microsoft.

Microsoft is now working on Windows Copilot, a new sidebar for Windows 11 that is powered by Bing Chat and can control Windows settings, answer questions, and lots more. Windows Copilot is expected to be available this fall as part of a Windows 11 update that will also include native RAR and 7-Zip support.

Didn't use Cortana, and I doubt I will use anything "powered" by a Bing doo-dad. Keep trying to distract us, MS - and we'll keep foiling your efforts. We just want an OS to get the work done that we want done. You're here for us - not the other way around.

Yep. I want my computer to run the apps I choose to run. I do NOT want it to always be connecting to the Internet in the background, sending telemetry and spying on me.

If I want to search for something, I can open a browser and a search engine. Anyone who can't shouldn't be allowed to operate a computer anyway.

Can they shut it down on Windows 10?

Just install an LTSC build. Cortana is excluded along with the Microsoft store.

Anything you wanted was just as easy or easier to type in anywhere else and you didnt have Ms misinterpreting everything.

Not to mention that Windows search (i.e., the search field on the taskbar) sucks. Whether it's Cortana, or text results, the search feature often can't find files with names that match letter for letter what you typed.

I liked Cortana, but I never actually found anything it could do. Sure it could tell jokes and make Halo references, but if I asked it to launch an application, change the volume, shut down the computer, &c., it would give me a generic "I can't do that" message. What was the point?
