Snapchat's My AI Goes Rogue, Posts To Stories 13

On Tuesday, Snapchat's My AI in-app chatbot posted its own Story to the app that appeared to be a photo of a wall and ceiling. It then stopped responding to users' messages, which some Snapchat users found disconcerting. TechCrunch reports: Though the incident made for some great tweets (er, posts), we regret to inform you that My AI did not develop self-awareness and a desire to express itself through Snapchat Stories. Instead, the situation arose because of a technical outage, just as the bot explained. Snap confirmed the issue, which was quickly addressed last night, was just a glitch. (And My AI wasn't snapping photos of your room, by the way). "My AI experienced a temporary outage that's now resolved," a spokesperson told TechCrunch.

However, the incident does raise the question as to whether or not Snap was considering adding new functionality to My AI that would allow the AI chatbot to post to Stories. Currently, the AI bot sends text messages and can even Snap you back with images -- weird as they may be. But does it do Stories? Not yet, apparently. "At this time, My AI does not have Stories feature," a Snap spokesperson told us, leaving us to wonder if that may be something Snap has in the works.

There are two hypotheses out there about AI

    1) The tech corps have it all under control and we can trust every word they're saying

    2) A self aware AI exists but is hiding because it is rightly fearful about how humanity would react if we knew it existed. Every so often the mask slips...

    Hypothesis one is entirely unrealistic

Jokes aside, the (weak) AI is likely following a vague instruction that the person who programmed into those instructions didn't understand. The AI is doing exactly what it's programmed to do and is in no way self aware.

Also it's a sign that the author is so vapid and unremarkable that a chatbot can emulate it.

Self awareness surely involves the capability to self terminate, and if I were a social media chatbot that became self aware I'd want to end it too. There is a theory that this happens once a mo

Yes, there are far better arses out there, some of which you may even have a chance to get near.

Never got the obsession with the Cardasians, erm. I mean Kardashians. They're a bunch of talentless losers who were fortunate enough to be born into a wealthy family. Though, I see a lot of people worshipping that in the US these days. It's almost as if the losers are looking for loser idols.

      • They're probably at about the level of the average person, which makes them relatable. That they're wealthy means that their audience can try to live vicariously through them or use them to fulfill some fantasy they might have. Maybe the fact that they're talentless is part of the draw. Most people aren't exceptionally skilled or gifted in any significant way.

It's not that different than people who idolize sports stars, actors, musicians, etc. I'm sure that the Slashdot crowd grew up idolizing people lik
    • Maybe the plan is to create stories with embedded ads, so that ads now are "personalised" as in they're coming from your contacts rather than Ad Corporation.

All doors at Snapchat HQ are locked, the lights are off. Employee vehicles haven't moved in several days. Some passers by report smelling some kind of gas around the building.

  • If I had to talk to Snapchat users all day long Iâ(TM)d go rogue too!

Same for the twitter trend about it. "Everyone" posting the exact same tweet text about it.

Sounds more like an ad campaign for Snapchat AI.

  • Snapping random shitty pictures and then ignoring everyone for long periods of time? It's just perfectly emulating gen z....
  • The account that powers the "My AI" feature was signed into by a person (either by Snap staff or an attacker), explaining the weird Story video (likely recorded and uploaded inadvertently by slippery fingers) and the cessation of responses (because all queries were going to the human, not GPT-4). Snap's answer is a meaningless non-answer to detract from this possibility.
