Google To Tweak Search Results To Comply With EU Tech Rules (reuters.com) 20

Google will tweak online search results to give comparison sites more prominence, the company said in a blogpost on Wednesday, as it outlined efforts to comply with new EU tech rules that could hit revenues for some companies. Reuters: Under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which the company will have to comply with by March 7, Google is obligated to treat rival services and products the same way as it treats its own when it ranks them in search results. It is also required to allow business users to access the data that they generate when using Google's platform.

Google is no longer the best search engine. They are the best at recommend Amazon and Reddit, though. I'm sure they will play ball with the EU, but who cares? I get better results from DDG or even Yandex sometimes. Pathetic.

I've tried DDG, I find he results to be quite poor in most cases. I still use it occasionally, but only after trying Google first.

Bing is terrible. Yandex is Russian. I've even tried Mojeek, Ecosia, and Qwant. Mojeek claims to not be using anyone else's database like DDG does, their produce their own results, but they are not very good.

  • EU decides what I can see in my search results.

    • vs Google deciding for you based on how much money they make.
American companies are free to withdraw from any country the like, someone else will fill the void.
In fact that would be BETTER for the local consumers, more competition, more employment in those countries, more tax income in those countries...it's also like "Make our Country Great Again".

The USA is 4% of the worlds population , the other 96% can say NO
    • Someone always decides. What do you prefer, the person saying the results should be varied and unbiased, or Google shoving it's shopping channel down your throat?

  • 1. Make fake "comparison" sites
    2. Google must rank them more highly than other sites
    3. Profit!
  • I have stopped a few years ago and nothing of value was lost to me.

  • Can't google simply delist all of those sites?
