An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: Microsoft-backed OpenAI is working on a type of agent software to automate complex tasks by taking over a users' device, The Information reported on Wednesday, citing a person with knowledge on the matter. The agent software will handle web-based tasks such as gathering public data about a set of companies, creating itineraries or booking flight tickets, according to the report, opens new tab. The new assistants -- often called "agents" -- promise to perform more complex personal and work tasks when commanded to by a human, without needing close supervision.

You've got to be pretty certain the AI isn't going to hallucinate or do other wrong things before you want to let it loose on this sort of thing. Taking the programming example (which is a decently hard task), getting an AI to actually write the function you have in your head is really hard and takes almost as many words in the prompt as characters in the resulting function. This is not 100% true and really relies on the context of the code you're trying to write. If you're looking to write a straightforward function where the context is contained within the file you're writing the function in, then most AI assistants should have no issue with that. But the second you want to write a function that requires context from multiple sources in a project outside the current file, then you're going to start running into problems.

We have iPhones at work. We just got a notification that we need to back up any data we have on them to OneDrive because they are about to move them into Microsoft's management solution, and when this happens the device has to be wiped.
Truly we live in the end times.
The OneDrive on our desktops (well laptops now actually) is the personal edition, no clue on the phones. I don't have any images on mine so it won't affect me, since I don't actually use it. They say they're going to take our desk IP phones away

This is just another symptom of Microsoft (and the computer industry in general) thinking that everyone wants to do exactly the same thing as everyone else on their computer.
Sadly we're seeing the death of the personal computer as every O/S company seems hell bent on turning the PC into a "social media & forced advertising" appliance. Much like a glorified TV.
The only good thing is this should help the uptake of Linux/the BSDs as they still seem happy to let users decide what they want to do with their PC - not withstanding the GNOME project who simply copy (really badly) whatever crap Apple are up to !

If they worked to transform design files into a fully automated manufacturing factory, dealing with the varying problems that arise in manufacturing via simulation and automated testing then they could massively increase productivity to the point where they could increase both profit AND make ecologically friendly products.
Instead of doing something useful for society, they have chosen to work on making a convenience machine even more convenient.

This is pretty much the beginning of my biggest... I don't want to say fear, but worry maybe? About our current "AI" systems. Set them up to automate simple shit, and some bumbling moron somewhere will be utterly convinced they're capable of making important decisions about critical infrastructure because it'll save a buck over having a human watch over things. AI won't kill us in the ways the sci-fi dystopian prognosticators have always claimed. AI will "assist" us in killing ourselves. Our stupidity will be our undoing. AI will just get us there a little faster than we would have managed without it.
