Threads Deepens Its Ties To the Fediverse (techcrunch.com) 19

An anonymous reader quotes a report from TechCrunch: Threads is deepening its ties to the fediverse, also known as the open social web, which powers services like X alternative Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Flipboard and other apps. On Wednesday, Meta announced that users on Threads will be able to see fediverse replies on other posts besides their own. In addition, posts that originated through the Threads API, like those created via third-party apps and scheduling services, will now be syndicated to the fediverse. The latter had previously been announced via an in-app message informing users that API posts would be shared to the fediverse starting on August 28. [...]

Since June, users have been able to see fediverse replies on their posts if they enabled fediverse sharing in the app's settings. Once enabled, the sharing option allows users to syndicate their posts across the wider social web and then see how people on other services have responded. Now users will be able to see the fediverse replies on other people's posts, too. This immediately brings more content into Threads, even without a sizable increase in Threads users.

A Meta engineer suggested testing the feature by viewing the replies of larger accounts, like YouTuber Marques Brownlee (@mkbhd), for example. Here, you'll notice a new section that shows how many "fediverse replies" are available above the replies posted to Threads itself. It's worth noting that you have to tap or click on the "fediverse replies" section to actually view what's being said on other servers and by who. Currently, Threads users can like the replies from other servers, but they can't yet reply to them, as the feature is still in beta and under development.

    Fediverse is going to get Zucked in a few short years. Such a shame the open standards just can't "keep up" with the "innovations" Threads needs to remain a relevant product. Good news is it's just so easy to transfer your current account to a Threads account!

      Some Fediverse servers have decided not to accept data from Threads. That's the beauty of it - you can choose a server that suits your preferences, or run your own. Take data from who you want to, set your own moderation policies.

    • Except no. Threads doesn't control the protocol - W3C published protocol. Threads can change their implementation but the Fediverse outside of it chugs along as before.

      The real issue of threads to me is simply the scale. Many Fediverse instances are quite small. A post getting 20 million 'likes' could be problematic to that smaller instance.

      Fedi is a trojan horse INTO the Meta world. It can be used to liberate the people there if they want...and they may not. But the last time a monolith opened it'

Zuckerberg/Meta's recently disclosed that they were asked to censor potential misinformation The SCOTUS even ruled 6 to 3 that the government didn't overstep it's authority in asking social media to censor potential misinformation. The timing of this disclosure is suspicious, to put it mildly, as it was immediately weaponized by Trump-- "...SUPPRESS HUNTER BIDEN LAPTOP STORY (& much more!) IN OTHER WORDS

        Boy, this "Party" controlling the government in 2020 to rig an election sounds pretty bad. Who was President then? And what political party did he belong to?

        • This is where you hear about the first level of conspiracies that allow a Trumper's worldview to roughly align with reality. But they always have to add more later, like adding epicycles to explain the geocentric universe.

    This is worth mentioning. There is a strong anti-Facebook sentiment on the Fediverse.

    I for one can't bear the thought of this disgusting toxic Big Data company coming on yet another community I take part in - one that specifically chose because I want nothing to do with Facebook to begin with - to slurp up more data and add users it doesn't deserves to its service for free.

  • A lot of hype years ago and haven't heard anything lately.

    • I replaced Reddit with Lemmy, others have replaced Twitter with Mastodon. No they're not as popular, but I'm ok with that. Maybe they'll grow, maybe not. Either way it's a better experience that I'm pleased with.

      I think it's kind of weird that people are complaining about Facebook getting involved. No I don't like them or use them either, but people wanted open and federated protocols and that's what we're getting, we should be at least somewhat happy that the big players are playing.
