Microsoft launched its annual Windows 11 update today, introducing significant changes to the operating system. The Windows 11 2024 Update, or 24H2, will roll out gradually, starting with PCs running versions 22H2 or 23H2 that have opted for faster feature updates. Key additions include an Energy Saver feature, Wi-Fi 7 support, and 80Gbps USB4 Version 2.0 compatibility. Select high-end PCs meeting Copilot+ requirements will gain access to enhanced features like an improved Recall function and generative AI tools in Paint.
This update marks the most substantial overhaul of Windows 11 since its 2021 release, with major changes to the compiler, kernel, and scheduler. It will probably be HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\UNSCRoland\Enabled by December, just in time to catch everybody unprepared and succeed with the forced rollout.
A few years from now, the setting will be fully ignored anyway, and you won't be able to stop it through any means either. Just like they did with Defender, Telemetry, Windows Update, Windows Store, Phone Link, Windows Search, Edge being the default and overriding any useful PDF viewer, searching Bing from the Start Menu, etc.

I'll save you some more time: Do nothing. You don't *have* to click the copilot button. Not everyone has a compulsion to press every button they see like a 5 year old in a lift.

Stability improvements are good.
Security improvements are good.
Hardware compatibility improvements are good. ... But efficiency improvements are also good. Better than new features I don't want and certainly don't want to be mandatory. And I don't want interface changes so everyone I support has to relearn basics - the whole original point of Windows was to run different apps all under the same interface standard to make things easier.

There's quite a bit of runway left with one of (really nice!) W10 LTSCs supported 'til 2032.

Well, that's not what I asked for and I already have the Windows 10 LTSC right now on several machines and want to have the W11 LTSC in order to verify it works with the applications we are running.

Usually new windows versions introduce new incompatability issues with your devices.
At least for the core Microsoft should go open source to get it stable and secure

Hopefully this release includes the performance improvements for Zen4 and Zen5 based CPUs.

Welcome to design by committee. Given USB 4.0 Version 2 uses fundamentally different signalling and requires OS level support over USB 4.0 Version 1 I agree with you this should have been called USB 5.0

No? Then no reason to be excited. I have the misfortune that I recently got a reserve laptop for teaching and it came with Win11. Suddenly I need to search for stuff that should be easy to find. It is astonishing how MS manages to make, what was once their flagship product, worse and worse. I think I will dual-boot that Laptop and check whether there are still to many beamers that crash when X11 actually follows the HDMI standard.
