Internet Archive Resumes Read-Only Service After Cyberattack 14

The Internet Archive has resumed operations in a read-only state following a cyberattack that took the digital library offline on October 9, coupled with the theft of 31 million user authentication records. "Safe to resume but might need further maintenance, in which case it will be suspended again," said Brewster Kahle, Internet Archive's founder. The website is currently now allowing users to save pages.

If so, it needs to be neutral with regards to nation, and all critical systems (DNA, IANA, IETF) should be moved there as well.

    • If /. history goes back far enough I once wrote about how a guild could work.

But that was before I learned how nation states feel the need to destroy any mechanism of control outside their own.

Also ops guys are not usually high T which would be needed to protect a free Internet.

Encrypt and back up everything, for now.

  • Probably should be "not allowing" where it says "now allowing"?

    • those kinds of typos are the worst that change the meaning in a way that can still make sense in any possibly applicable context
  • That the hackers were able to break in to the site two weeks before they took it down in October. And after they were able to gain access, they contacted Internet Archive about it, but they were ignored. So for two weeks Internet Archive knew about this, but did nothing.

It was after the hackers were ignored repeatedly, that they then used that as a reason(excuse?) to take down the site and release the data.

Great job to be able to come back on line even if it's read-only! The Internet archive is similar to some type of backup and backing up the backups is a tremendous task. Maybe the archive wasn't deleted or ransomwared but still, great job!

  • Only one of their services is working now.

I'd rather just believe that it's done by little elves running around.

Working...
