Indonesia Bans Google Pixel Phones Over Local Rules (techcrunch.com) 32

Indonesia has banned sales of Google Pixel smartphones for failing to meet a 40% local content requirement, days after blocking Apple's iPhone 16 in Southeast Asia's biggest phone market. Google must obtain local content certification before resuming sales in Indonesia, Industry Ministry spokesman Febri Hendri Antoni Arief said. The move follows last week's iPhone 16 ban after Apple failed to fulfill a $95 million investment pledge.

I hope you realize this is just a demand for baksheesh. Indonesia demanding that every phone in th eworld must have at least 40 percent Indonesian produced parts is nothing more than pecuniary extraction.

Indonesia is dominated by Chinese Vivo and Xiaomi... which also aren't made in Indonesia. Indonesia is part of a bunch of trading alliances with China though.

This feels more like Indonesia being a puppet of Pooh Bear rather than any actual issue Indonesia has with Apple/Google.

Indonesia as typical of most Muslim countries is a huge fence sitter and has been since the beginning of the Cold War.

Not really, Indonesia is just doing what China does. The way they see it is this: You want to sell smartphones our 284.000.000 million citizens and potential consumers? Well then, build a factory here and make at least 40% of all components from scratch over here. It's just a variant of the Chinese tactic of forcing anybody who wants to invest in China to form a 50/50 partnership with a local company. I don't see a reason to dump on the Indonesians for this, it seems like a good idea. This how EU leaders sh

I agree, but that's not the way the EU does things.

              • I agree, but that's not the way the EU does things.

The EU already has variations, as does every other country. In fact that is the whole purpose of the EU. There are rules for people from countries that are in the EU market and different rules for people in countries that aren't.

My point is the established fact that the EU prefers to hand out big fines, not that they want to force phone construction in the EU.

                  • My point is that isn't true. The whole point of the EU market is to protect the local products of member countries from outside competition. It also assures that the member countries don't impose restrictions on one another's products. And they collectively agree on restrictions for other countries' products.
                    • Use the size and profit potential from your local market to get better trade deals, help your country's GDP grow, help employ your citizens, help upgrade your manufacturing capacity, prevent your manufacturing industry to leave the country, ...

Why doesn't the EU in it''s better approach to the world, simply write their own social media, their own version of everything and simply tell Apple and Google To sod off? Band any software or phone that the deem is not favorable to their citizens, and since the EU is the world leader in serving their citizens, they won't have to levy fines on those evilz murrican companies. Their problem is solved, and the superior manufacturing and software writers will be well employed.

Well, there will probably be more EU citizens employed if they make all of their own phones, block off the rest of the internet, and write all their own software. Don't you think? I don't know how many EU citizens are working in Chinese factories, do you?

More like force EV, not phone manufacturing in the EU, and yes they should want that. It is what China did and that worked out fantastically for them.

True indeed. The concept of levying fines instead of building out infrastructure is the sort of thing that ends up with a country or union falling behind. It is a lazy approach, and I'm not the only one pointing this out. https://www.ft.com/content/80a... [ft.com]

The present approach is in condensed form - "I don't like your profit - you have to pay me money.

        • Indonesia while large population has a lower percentage of high tier device consumers that would afford new iPhones. The used market helps lower prices. Apple made an effort but it is a tall ask from Indonesia for moderate sales. Wealthy consumers will pay duty but it does deter many in the upper mid range from choosing iPhone. Pixel has other android alternatives so their market share potential also constrained. 40 pct is high when chips and other special high value components not feasible. Leaves housings

  • The rule is an awkward and hard to measure "40% produced in Indonesia" but Indonesia accepted more specific commitments from both Apple and Google for investment/job commitments effectively in lieu of meeting this production rule. They both foolishly fell short. At least in Apple's case it wasn't a significant shortfall, haven't seen Google's shortfall published -- but if Apple managed better than 80%, why didn't they manage 100%?
