Indonesia Bans Google Pixel Phones Over Local Rules (techcrunch.com) 23
Indonesia has banned sales of Google Pixel smartphones for failing to meet a 40% local content requirement, days after blocking Apple's iPhone 16 in Southeast Asia's biggest phone market. Google must obtain local content certification before resuming sales in Indonesia, Industry Ministry spokesman Febri Hendri Antoni Arief said. The move follows last week's iPhone 16 ban after Apple failed to fulfill a $95 million investment pledge.

Not really, Indonesia is just doing what China does. The way they see it is this: You want to sell smartphones our 284.000.000 million citizens and potential consumers? Well then, build a factory here and make at least 40% of all components from scratch over here. It's just a variant of the Chinese tactic of forcing anybody who wants to invest in China to form a 50/50 partnership with a local company. My point is the established fact that the EU prefers to hand out big fines, not that they want to force phone construction in the EU.
