Malaysian Lawmakers Approve Bill To Broaden Internet Control (bloomberg.com) 19

Malaysian lawmakers voted in favor of broadening the government's control over the internet, unmoved by criticism that the law risks suppressing dissent and free speech. From a report: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil told parliament Monday that the government needed to amend existing laws to tackle online harm including scams, cyber-bullying, and more. "Freedom of speech does exist, but we are also given power through parliament to impose any necessary restrictions for the safety of the public," said Fahmi.

The bill imposes stricter penalties on content violations and grants sweeping powers to law enforcement, such as the right of any authorized officer to search and seize without a warrant. Service providers may also be held liable under the law, and compelled to disclose user data to authorities during investigations of alleged violations. More than 20 consultation sessions were held with stakeholders in the drafting of the bill, Fahmi said.

  • I wonder the dissonance level of American lefties reading such an article. For one, they want deep control and to stamp out such things. But on the other hand, their technical and historical knowledge knows this is wrong.

Joe Rogan with Mike Benz [youtube.com] is scary on internet censorship. The US and foreign governments hand in glove with big tech to silence speech they don't like.

Rogan has quite an inside view of censorship, as totalitarian mouthpiece for an treasonous insurgency or criminals.

When Tiny Hands tries to revoke broadcasting licenses from journalists that criticize him, as he pledged to do, will Rogan mumble qualified criticism before immediately flying into some pathetic "whatabout" excuses? Or will he go the full Nazi psychosis and call it "defense of freedom," like slavery was to the Confederates?
    • Lefties? The bill to effectively de-platform the entirety of American TikTok users passed with bipartisan support. It's time to wake up sheeple [xkcd.com] and realize that both parties aren't entirely sold on the concept of free speech as it reads in the First Amendment. The government was a lot more accepting of the concept of free speech, back when it meant someone standing on a literal soapbox speaking to a small audience. Every time technology has made it increasingly easier to disseminate speech, another aste

There are no lefties in the US. Your leftiest politician would be considered centrist in Europe. Bernie Sanders is the only vaguely left-leaning guy you have. That must be why living in the US is so hellish, with 80+ working hours, no vacations, expensive healthcare, infrastructure falling to pieces, mass shootings every other day.. . What a sick place to be in.

While I agree with this, I'm afraid that Europe has an uphill task to demonstrate that its system is sustainable long term.

Socialism is a sweet thing, but it might be economically non-competitive to harsh, Dickensian capitalism utilized by the USA and China (and potentially, India).

Because Europe can't possibly exist without the US right? Or is that just your End-Stage Capitalism talking because you need that line to convince the paroles under you that the best place for them is under your heel?

It also lacks religious freedom, with evangelising Muslims to become Christians a criminal offence that IS prosecuted. Given these facts, these new powers are part of a wider pattern of undemocratic behaviour by that government.
