Cloudflare's VPN App Among Half-Dozen Pulled From Indian App Stores (techcrunch.com) 12

More than half-a-dozen VPN apps, including Cloudflare's widely-used 1.1.1.1, have been pulled from India's Apple App Store and Google Play Store following intervention from government authorities, TechCrunch reported Friday. From the report: The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs issued removal orders for the apps, according to a document reviewed by TechCrunch and a disclosure made by Google to Lumen, Harvard University's database that tracks government takedown requests globally.

Your government wants to protect you from privacy.

If the government banned the VPN provider then it was probably a good one...

Personally I'm more interested to get all government officials to disclose all their finances? Public officials should have less privacy.

Trump had NUMEROUS financial scandals leaked and even a few felony convictions, but it never hurt him...same with Putin. Everyone knows both are bad people and yet both won the popular vote. I wish what you said was true, but what baffles me is that Trump has his supporters and will win no matter what he does or how bad of a job he does. So while it's good to learn why politicians are crooks, it only works on rational voters and it seems like the USA has way too many irrational voters right now.

      • Same shit for Modi, a lot of his misdeeds HAVE been reported in India but he still has an undeserved approval rating. Is it a lie, probably, but not entirely. People love to believe in the myth of a strong man leader so much they will pretend they aren't backing fascism.

India has a lot of censorship, they don't really have free speech. In practice I know that it can lead to abuses and problems, but I also understand they are trying to prevent this sort of thing from happening [wikipedia.org].

It seems like there is a better way, though.
    • Nasty sociopaths exploit indigenous religions for power.

To some extent the Dream of the Brahman is inherently collectivist.

In the same way Mao exploited Buddhism's call for nonresistance to murder 90M Chinese, Modi and his crew can censor the Hindus to maintain power.

Imagine if alternate sources of "truth" were allowrd to teach Indians! Why, they might form their own opinions and, gasp, seek self-determination.

Anyway, apps are too easy to ban. It's nasty that Google and Apple don't support Wireguard nativ

There shouldn't be a Cloudflare VPN client app. Just use generic Wireguard or OpenVPN app, and have the service support the standard.

Do that, and your service becomes much harder to remove from the app store.

    • The apps are required to edit the VPN config files ... because Google does not provide a generic editor that could be granted the needed rights. Wireguard is build into Android's kernel, and Android has an "Always-on VPN" feature. BUT you currently cannot configure Wireguard without the Wireguard app without rooting the phone.
  • Did they say? Maybe this post needed "more"?

Gee, Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.

Working...
