LG Ceases XR Product Efforts (uploadvr.com) 30

An anonymous reader shares a report: LG has ceased its XR product commercialization efforts, it confirmed, though will still continue long-term R&D.

The news of LG ending its XR product plans was first reported by South Korean news outlet The Bell, citing an industry source. In a statement given to the outlet, LG confirmed the claim but clarified that it will still continue long-term XR research and development.

According to The Bell, LG took the decision because it believes the XR market isn't growing as quickly as it expected, and it wants to focus more on heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and robotics.

Would be nice if TFS would give a hint as to what this is, exactly.

Some kind of VR goggle partnership with meta that was announced a year ago, apparently

    • They are either talking about Extinction Rebellion or it's an umbrella term covering Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality.

Perhaps they cancelled it because they didn't know what it was either.
Chang Kim: Hey Will, do you know what XR is?
      William Cho: No idea
Chang Kim: OK if I cancel it?
William Cho: Sure, but you have to write the press release!
Chang Kim: Hah! I will use AI to do that!

Must have been written by AI. I actually went to go read the article since I have no idea what XR is. And to my non-surprise the article didn't say either.

Not that the summary or linked article explain anything. Here's the wikipedia page on it [wikipedia.org]

    • The Korean article that is linked from the article that this summary links. Translated from Korean to English, contains this paragraph:

      > XR is a concept that encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). It is a technology that uses various senses such as vision, hearing, and movement to help users experience new experiences across the surrounding reality and virtual worlds. Meta, Apple, etc., launched a dedicated device, and the XR wind blew.

    • It's VR. I guess some dumbasses decided to give it a bigger name. I think it's supposed to cover augmented reality and virtual reality but whatever.

If the article didn't suck so much this would actually be pretty big news. Having a major player like LG dropping out of the VR market to focus on AI bullshit is huge. It also seems kind of stupid. Don't get me wrong VR is a dead end since a substantial portion of the population can't use it either do the motion sickness or various eye problems, the latter o

The money in AI is going to come from manipulating people.

Advertising 2.0. Kids are going to grow up talking to Teletubbies, who will recommend all sorts of things they need.

        But this:

Apple is selling a $10,000 m4 Macintosh pro it's got about maybe $500 worth of hardware in it.

Is way off. Show me another machine with half a terabyte of RAM addressable by the GPU for twice that cost. Whatever anyone thinks of the LLM nuttiness, it is selling hardware, an
      • Lg is a highly diversified toothpaste company actually

      • LG isn't a big player in the XR/VR headset, it even is hardly a player, they had an awful headset a couple of years ago. If Meta would cease XR product efforts, now THAT would be actual news.

When 6 out of 7 comments on a story are pointing out that the headline and summary are shit, then it is VERY CLEARLY time to get a new person - or AI - to write headlines and summaries.

In just how much contempt do the owners of this site hold their readers?
    • To be fair, just as much contempt LG has for the market they were serving. The fact that no one here on Slashdot knows (save for a few VR fanbois) is shows not so much a failure for Slashdot, but a failure for LG.

I'm a big fan of all this stuff, and geeky early adopter. I watch this stuff closely, and I had NO FUCKING IDEA LG was even a player in this space.

    • Thing is, the management layer got replaced by "AI" a long long time ago. So when the editors go: "readers at Slashdot go 'that headline is crap', what should I do?" their boss goes "why do you say: readers at Slashdot go 'that headline is crap', what should I do?"...
      • What makes you think why do you say: readers at Slashdot go 'that headline is crap', what should I do?

[I think you're close to the truth.]
  • EXTREME REALITY! Get you some! Now that virtual reality has a hype name, you won't want to miss out! This is what VR has been missing all along! The name wasn't EXTREME enough! Reality isn't real until it's XXXXXXXXTREME!

Would have been cool if the summary or article had pointed out what XR was and I didn't have to go hunting to figure it out. One of the secrets to marketing hype is actually giving some hint as to what the marketing hype is for.
