Facebook Sought To 'Neutralize' Competitive Threats, FTC Argues As Landmark Antitrust Trial Begins (deadline.com) 18

An anonymous reader shares a report: An attorney for the Federal Trade Commission told a judge that Facebook, fearing the competitive threat of Instagram posted to their social media network, acquired both as a way to "neutralize" the rival. "They decided that competition was too hard," the FTC's attorney, Daniel Matheson, said in his opening statement in the government's antitrust case against the Meta Platforms social media empire.

He argued that with Meta's monopoly in social media, "consumers do not have reasonable alternatives they can turn to," even as satisfaction has declined. At stake is the potential breakup of Facebook-parent Meta, as the government has zeroed in on the 2012 acquisition of Instagram and 2014 purchase of WhatsApp.

TikTok is where everyone is now. When it was Facebook and then Instagram the argument held much more water.
  • TFA says:

"An attorney for the Federal Trade Commission told a judge that Facebook, fearing the competitive threat of Instagram posted to their social media network, acquired both as a way to “neutralize” the rival.

I'm pretty sure that should have read:

"An attorney for the Federal Trade Commission told a judge that Facebook, fearing the competitive threat which Instagram and Whatsapp posed to their social media network, acquired both as a way to “neutralize” the rivals".

That's the only way I can configure TFA to make sense.

I guess this is what happens when a reporter texts an article in close to deadline while getting a blow-job in the back of a cab.

  • If they did something wrong back then, hit them with an appropriate fine and move on. Breaking them up doesn't make sense anymore, there is more than enough competition in the market.
    • I agree, but since Zuckerberg is such a creepy scoundrel i have no sympathy for him and will enjoy seeing his enterprise torn apart, see ya later, going to get popcorn for this show
      • Okay, but what about the non-creepy non-scoundrels that work there and would have their lives ruined for your viewing pleasure?
    • They could just nationalize them.
      • I'm not sure if that's true. I don't know if the Federal government has that authority or has ever done it.
    • Yes, and it it was such a bad merger, why didn't the Justice Department tell them not to do it in the first place? The DOJ is supposed to review mergers of large companies. I'm no fan of Zuck or Meta, but seems kins chickenshit to come after them after being silent on the IG buyout.
      • That's a good point. The time for intervention is past, the horses out of the barn. They shouldn't be able to now go back and punish Meta for doing what they were told they were allowed to do.

Will be finding out how big a bribe they have to give Trump to get The case dropped.

And yeah Facebook buys out competitors every few years. They have to because every few years there's a new social media website all the kids go to because no kid wants to be on the same site as their parents.
  • About damn time... 8-)

If we had decent regulation, those acquisitions shouldn't have happened. Instead, we look at it after the fact and try to turn it into either a bribe factory for the administration, or a fine developer / post tax for the fact the government was asleep at the wheel when this shit was happening.

The USA seems to ignored the purchase of competitors in most cases. Why is this any different? FedEx bought TNT Cargo which was a much for affordable air courier just to kill their competitor and expand their business. Air shipping costs have gone up as a result from what I can see.
  • I guess Zuck didn't make a large enough "campaign contribution".
