LG Will Shut Down Update Servers For Its Android Smartphones In June (9to5google.com) 17

LG will permanently shut down its Android smartphone update servers on June 30, 2025, ending all software, app, and security updates for its devices. If you're still using an smartphone, you'll want to install any remaining updates before that date, as no future updates will be available afterward. 9to5Google reports: When LG called it quits for Android smartphones, the company also committed to a few more updates. That included an Android 12 update for select devices, the last major update the company would put out, as well as security updates for at least three years after each device had been released. That three-year cutoff has long since passed for all LG devices, but any devices still floating around out there will soon no longer be able to pull updates. LG's notice can be read here.

      There was...
Apparently it was part of their developer website, that shut down at the end of 2021, 6 months after they announced there would be no more phones.

Those who bought the phone, had the chance to unlock it.

      • Does that mean these people could still keep their phones updated by installing Lineage OS?

        • Lineage OS supports only these phones: https://wiki.lineageos.org/dev... [lineageos.org] and eventually, these will likely age-off the list.

Or the batteries will become unobtanium.

XDAForum.com has Roms, and how to guides, for all sorts of old Android devices. I've updated a few devices via there. I've got an old Samsung Tab2 10.1 upgraded from Android 4 to Android 6 (it can do Android 8, but the camera breaks) letting me use it again for Netflix and Disney. They cover LG phones not on that list and can get you up to an Android version higher than any official version. I might dust off my LG G6 and give it a try later. Battery wise depends on aftermarket spares. You can still find new
        • Sounds like something you could google yourself.

  • Too bad to see them leave the market. I liked their phones.
  • Weren't they one of the biggest players in that space? Who's left in the premium tier, Samsung and Motorola?

  • I have a LG G Pad III that was already kinda crappy from the time I got it (for free).. but I might dig it out to see if there are any more updates for it, if need be.

That's the thing with android, Zero Support. if your phone is a year old it will never get anymore updates. and your shit outta luck. You android lovers rave about your phones but they get bricked and now what do you got? Trash.

Plenty of unnoficial support. There are enthusiasts who work on newer roms for devices out there and put out guides on how to update. They are very nice people.

The problem is more of consistency, what level/duration of support you get and from whom depends on the manufacturer, the reseller (telco), or even the individual model. You need to do your research before you buy.

  • There are still some updates made to Android through Lineage, I've got a G4 H815 that still works just fine but AT&T won't allow it on their network (while allowing the hard-locked H810, stuck on I don't even know what ancient version of Android, how does that makes sense). Anyway it was a nice phone, even with the weird button placement and once the bootlooping ones got replaced under warranty :D
