Google is Putting AI Mode Right in Search (theverge.com) 22

A "small percentage" of Google's users in the US will begin seeing an AI Mode tab in Google Search "in the coming weeks," the company said Thursday, marking the tool's first deployment outside the company's experimental Labs environment.

Unlike traditional search results that display URLs based on user queries, AI Mode generates conversational responses from Google's search index. The feature will appear as a dedicated tab positioned before the standard "All," "Images," and other search filters. The deployment represents Google's direct challenge to LLM-powered search engines like Perplexity and ChatGPT.

AI Mode differs from existing AI Overviews in Google Search, which merely insert AI summaries between the search box and web results.

What we were actually asking them to do is remove all that inaccurate, plagiarizing, hallucinating bullshit from the page completely so it stops giving me wrong instructions about IT management.
    • What do you mean? I love it when I search for something very specific and it ignores me and gives me results for something else instead!

"Did you actually mean..." is one of my least favorite Google features. No, Google, if I actually meant something else, I would have typed something else. I don't care that it doesn't fit some higher ranking result that's been paid for, I spelled it the way I spelled it for a reason. Don't try your digital voodoo to push your ads on me.

I too rely on Google to manage my IT resources

  • ...with Gemini
I asked it for a graph and it replied something like
"I can't display the graph but you can search for it using these terms"
    WTF?
A google tool can't use google?

    • Yep. I'll take your word for it that Gemini won't search the web, but ChatGPT doesn't. I asked it when I started using it, and it said straight up that it does not go out and search the web.

    > What were the reasons for the deposal of King Edward II?

That's an excellent question! There were several interesting reasons for the deposal of King Edward II.

    You have three choices:
    1. Terrible answers from AI generated websites.
    2. Terrible answers from bots on Wikipedia and Reddit.
    3. Terrible answers from Google AI, which trained on AI generated websites, AI generated Wikipedia, and AI generated Reddit.

  • Google search sucks and has sucked for years now. Sucking even more in the future I see. Sucks so bad Sundar Pichai must feel just as sucky as the failure James Dyson does. Sucks to be them I guess.

  • I'm hoping they've trained their AI with diverse enough sources to return results wrapped in letmegooglethat.com. The irony of such a sassy reply would be amazing.

  • (shove) you (shove) will (shove) take (shove) our (shove) ai (shove) technology (shove) and (shove) you (shove) will (shove) like (shove) it.

After all, what is good for Google is good for America, right?

  • I've been seeing this for weeks, based in the UK have they been testing it? I just assumed everyone was getting this.

You have a tendency to feel you are superior to most computers.
