Pebble Time 2 Reboot Gets a Redesign (9to5google.com) 11

Pebble has unveiled the final design of its rebooted Pebble Time 2 smartwatch, featuring a stainless steel body, color accents, knurled buttons, a flat glass display, customizable RGB backlight, and a built-in compass. 9to5Google reports: In a new episode of his podcast "Tick Talk," original Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky discusses the progress being made on the revival. This time around, the main topic is Pebble Time 2 and its "final design," which sees a considerable redesign compared to what was shown off earlier this year. The new look has some added curves, color accents, knurled buttons, and a stunning overall look.

It'll be available in black and silver colors, as opposed to the black and white previously shown off. In between the metal portions of the build, a polycarbonate layer will allow the radios to work properly, while also adding a blue or red accent to the design. Apparently, there are four total color options on the table, but they're not final just yet. Anyone who has placed a pre-order will get the choice of what color they want.

The new Pebble Time 2 will be made from stainless steel, in particular the same steel material that the original Pebble Steel was built from. It also has transitioned to a flat glass panel versus the curved finish that was used on prior Pebble watches, lessening reflections. The backlight on this model is also more advanced, with an RGB LED that allows the user to control the backlight color so it's not always "blue-ish." Migicovsky says that this will allow the color temperature to change through the day.
The Pebble Time 2 is available to pre-order for $225.

  • Oh man! Oh man! This is the Pebble Time 2 I wanted, even kickstarted back in 2016. And they're projecting 30-days on a charge! Even my PTS only did 9 days at most! Even though this isn't expected to release till Christmas, I think I've found my next smartwatch!

  • I've always liked Pebble but that price... no. $199 max
  • And still no one is interested in it. I don't even know how Pebble is still in business.

There are one and a half smartwatches in use by most people i the U.S. Apple Watch and a much smaller share of Samsung Galaxy Watch.

The smartwatch market share distribution is not unlike that of the OS market. Windows, Mac, Linux is akin to Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy, and everyone else.

    • I feel like I see more Garmins than Samsungs but I don't pay too much attention

        I'll anecdotally second this.

If it's not an Apple Watch, I see quite a few Garmins (including my own).

I had a few different Pebble's back in the day and they were awesome... so I'm naturally in on the preorder. The 30 day battery life (even if it somehow turned out to just be 20 days) is a HUGE draw for me, in addition to the simplicity. Battery life is a huge reason I have a Garmin. Two weeks on a charge? Yes please.

And still no one is interested in it. I don't even know how Pebble is still in business.

Pebble was acquired by Google and then it got killed internally. Google released the Pebble OS as Open Source last year, and a project to reboot Pebble started around that time. For now, any Pebble watch you see is at least 10 years old.

I think this timeline doesn't hold.

Pebble killed itself by severe mismanagement (they had a huge number of people in the company; obviously large plans for the future but they didn't pan out, while cash was burning) and the remains of the company (basically IPR) were then acquired by Fitbit at 2016, which kept the servers running for some years. Then Google acquired Fitbit at 2021 and after some time released the Pebble OS.

And now it appears Core Devices was able to acquire the Pebble trademark from Goo

    • And still no one is interested in it. I don't even know how Pebble is still in business.

Except people were interested in it. Very much so. So much so that it got acquired by a major tech firm known for killing products. So much so that after the killing the company re-emerged (what is happening now) again.

Your post is ignorant in many ways. Pebble isn't still in business, it's in business again, precisely because people are interested in it.

And if you're happy with them great. More options on the market, including unique features like e-ink displays are a *GOOD THING*. You should be applauding

Pebble was able to kill itself, well before Google acquired Fitbit, and well before Fitbit acquired Pebble.

I pre-ordered one months ago. It looks like it's going to have great hardware and a completely open software stack. What's not to like about that? It probably won't be "mass market" and sell millions of units, but that doesn't bother me at all. I'd rather have something uncommon for which I can write my own software; that's a win/win.

The 30 day battery life sounds good, but I'd want to see what the heart rate monitor and sleep tracking are like before considering one. There is a guy on YouTube who compares the sensors to medical grade ones. Some of the best devices like the Google Pixel watches and Apple Watch manage to be decently accurate for heart rate and even sleep tracking, but it's apparently a very tough nut to crack because most do poorly.

For 20 quid I got a Mi Band 6, but the battery is wearing out now. The heart rate tracking

Computers can figure out all kinds of problems, except the things in the world that just don't add up.
