Samsung Confirms Plan To Make Foldable Displays for Major American Company (macrumors.com) 22

An anonymous reader shares a report: Samsung Display president Lee Cheong has confirmed plans to make foldable smartphone displays for a major American company, which is widely believed to be Apple. As reported in Chosun Biz, Cheong last week told journalists in Seoul that the company is accelerating preparations for mass production of OLED displays designed for foldable smartphones to be supplied to a "North American client." He declined to provide further information about the client, but it is widely expected to be Apple.

  • Their gimmicks (transparency, the solution to a problem no one ever fucking had) aren't working anymore to drive sales.

At least they'll actually have something different next year, instead of the same 'ol revision of what they've been making the last 5 years (even if this 'new' thing has been done by everyone else for those last 5 years).

I thought their gimmick was to release a "thinner" version of the previous model while and ignoring that people want better battery life.

    • Why do we expect anything other than an incremental increase capabilities? Should we expect anything other than "a little faster, with a slightly better camera"?

Actually, now that I think about it, what was the last new feature added to a phone that you found to be:
      Cool
      Not a potential risk
Something you'll probably use more than once?

For me, it was wireless charging. Using my phone to pay for things just sounds like an increased attack surface for my bank account. Using my face to unlock it sou

Because it was Apple (and every other manufacturer, but mainly Apple due to they yearly cycle everyone else copies) that set those expectations, long ago.

        • Yeah, fair enough. Then I guess a better question would be, "should we blame them for not meeting our unrealistic expectations?"
      • The ability to take 3D video is pretty cool. Though you do also have to have a vr headset to play it back in 3d. (I do.) Fortunately it doesn’t have to be Apple’s very expensive one. Also having Siri process requests on the phone itself is much faster and nice for when you are outside of a cell coverage area. And the camera is definitely nicer than my previous one. Lastly having 1 TB internal storage is pretty awesome. The 17 pro is clear upgrade to the 14 pro. Probably not as much of one if you
        • Okay, I didn't know that was a thing. It does sound kinda cool, though I don't know if it would pass the "something I'll use more than once" test.

But I also only talk at my phone if there's someone on the other end, don't take many photos (and most of them are of work things), and while I'd like more storage I decided to just pay a couple bucks a month for more iCloud instead of buying a new phone.

I know I'll have to, my 2020 SE's battery is getting a little iffy, but I am just not interested enough

"Anymore"? iPhone sales have been more or less flat for about a decade. I still call it a success to sell hundreds of billions of dollars of product based on (generally) small iterations version-to-version.

For the TI-84f, with an all-new foldable display and the same guts it's had since the 90's! Be the envy of your AP Calculus class!

Apple probably poured piles of R&D into developing their own folding tech, but now must admit Samsung won that research contest.

Although an alternative view is they think it's a passing fad and thus not worth their own R&D spending.

Apple doesn't produce their displays, flexible or otherwise.

Not to support Apple, but this is super silly argument. Apple does not and never has made their own displays.

Is anyone actually using a foldable? What's the usability advantage?

I've seen them in the wild, I don't really understand their appeal.

      I don't know. Are they?

I've seen them in the wild, I don't really understand their appeal.

Oh... you've actually seen people using them! So... yes.

    • Apples iphone will be about the size of a blackberry (so pocketable) and when unfolded the size between a pro max and a ipad mini.

This solves the problem with the big screen phones which are much better* to use but awkward to carry.

I will be interested to see what they do.

I still wish they had went to a folded size between watch and half an iphone. Which opened to iphone size. This could be the apple pocket watch or similar.

    • I have a Fold4. It fits in my pocket and can open up for taking notes with a stylus or multiple apps at once. Kinda niche, without the stylus like in the newest models it loses a lot of use, and other than multitasking it isn't much better inside for media content since it doesn't end up much bigger than holding the phone landscape anyhow. They're more fragile, got the Samsung warranty and have had it repaired one about a yearly tempo. I might go back to something more like the Ultra with the stylus whe
    • My wife had a Samsung fold. The crease in the fold got so bad after a couple years that it broke the screen. She was told she would need to send the phone away and pay $1200 to get it fixed. She doesn't have a fold any more, needless to say.
    • I'd love an iPad that I could fit in my pocket. Reading or watching videos on a larger screen is much more pleasant.

A friend has a foldable that folds like a flip phone, but utility seems somewhat limited. It seems like you need to unfold the device to do much of anything with it other than checking a notification, which just adds an extra step, and as a man I've never had trouble fitting an un-folded phone in my pockets. But I do acknowledge it's fun to fidget with, and maybe if you're a member of the

  • I'm sure they will still claim they were the 1st to bring it to market. Just like OLED displays and copy paste functionality.
    • When did Apple claim to be the first to do either of those things?

They, like many other companies, claim that their implementation is the best the world has ever seen, but the meme of "Apple pretends they invented stuff" is so overblown.

  • What I want is a foldable display that is 8'x4' but can fold up into 2'x4' so I can mount it on a wall between two doorways, but I can open it up to its full 8' to cover the entire wall. Also, make one for vacationers that folds to the size of a briefcase and opens to 64"x36".
