Google Says Hackers Are Sending Extortion Emails To Executives (reuters.com) 9

An anonymous reader shares a report: Google said hackers are sending extortion emails to an unspecified number of executives, claiming to have stolen sensitive data from their Oracle business applications. In a statement, Google said a group claiming affiliation with the ransomware gang cl0p, opens new tab was sending emails to "executives at numerous organizations claiming to have stolen sensitive data from their Oracle E-Business Suite." Google cautioned that it "does not currently have sufficient evidence to definitively assess the veracity of these claims."

I can only think of a handful of people I'd rather see harassed versus Google's executives. I hope they pee their pants and end up sending BTC to Romanians.

The only way this could be better if it were Oracle executives

    • I've received this type of email before. It had such atrocious grammar and spelling that it was immediately obvious that it was a scam, but it's hardly difficult to bluff about something like this and hope to catch someone panicking and not realizing that it's bullshit. It's no different than the scammers that will call a person and claim to have their wife, kids, etc hostage and that they'll be killed unless $XXXXX is immediately wired to them.

The claims are bullshit. Anyone with a bit of sensitive info
      • Yahoo weirdly has a better story via bloomberg. https://finance.yahoo.com/news... [yahoo.com] It appears they got something, "At least one company has confirmed that data from their Oracle systems has been stolen, according to one of the people." So I don't think complete BS. Other things in the bloomberg/yahoo describe a bit how the hack happened via oracle exploit. Too soon to claim real/fake I think. And if they really got some pee-pee tapes or epstein sized data, the exec's companies will just pay and we will never
      • Generally speaking any claims of a data breach of any sort without proof, such as extensive samples of the data, is amateur extortion. The thing is cl0p is not a joke of a group with elite Russian backing ..not like the ones you're describing, and has exfiltrated tons of data. But based on the fact that they used compromised e-mails to send a massive spam campaign to many companies, rather than their traditional dark web blog, makes me wonder if this is a double scam here and they are also impersonating c

Google is seeing the emails in its reported spam, it is not receiving them.

That's how the summary reads to me anyway.

  • If only Google were in a position where they look after mailboxes...
