Apple's $230 iPhone Pocket Sells Out Nearly Immediately (appleinsider.com) 67

Apple's limited-edition "iPhone Pocket" sold out almost instantly worldwide despite its $150-$230 price tag. Appleinsider reports: Longtime Apple users immediately saw the resemblance with the old iPod socks, and everyone saw the price. Apple and Japan's Issey Miyake fashion house partnered to create a limited edition iPhone Pocket, a stretched sock-like bag or shoulder strap.

There was no denying that an iPhone in this Pocket looked snuggly. There was definitely no denying that the accessory was well designed. There's also no question that it was about as goofy as the iPod Sock from back the in the day. But there was every denying of the price. The iPhone Pocket came in a short version for $150, and a longer one for $230.

For comparison, the Apple Watch SE starts at $250. As ever, though, if you liked it, if you had a use for it, and if you had the budget, there was no reason left not to buy. But if you have hesitated because of the cost, you are now out of luck. There are none left in the US.

If it's got the Apple logo on it there will be no shortage of suckers.

    • It's almost like Apple owners are a different species. They say they want perfectly manufactured accessories that fit to the device within a millimeter of specification and then they buy... A sock.

Do you think? Do you think that Android ownera are all Mensa members or Illuminati?

The iPhone pocket was for sale in very limited locations, picked for demographics. Deciding Apple users are a separate species is kind of prejudiced.

Let's see, there are many of us, like myself, who are on Apple products for a number of reasons

MacOS is UNIX. I'm UNIX. So I'm going to have a UNIX computer. I spend hella much time in Terminal.

        • The fact that you can't integrate them yourself and require Apple to do it for you tells me that the Unix thing is just something that helps you sleep at night.
          • Just if you can do something it doesn't mean you'll want to. When I got my first Mac, it was more about working on the computer than working for it. And the mac's unix-ish-terminal is still a nice thing to have, when you need it, compared to windows' command console. At least for me :-) The iphone sock is a limited edition luxury item. When you have millions of users, there's always a few with more money than brains, regardless of the OS they use.

Just a note - MacOS is Unix https://www.theregister.com/20... [theregister.com]. Linux is Unixy as we say. Note that Unix is "POSIX compliant" now, and has been for a long time, (1993) so the pedants among us might want to weigh in on that.

Point is, I bash around in Terminal half the day. The default is now zsh, but bash sounds better to speak.

Yeah, when I have to go into Windows command line, I have to remember to shift my mental state.

Main point is, I have Apple create the ecosystem while I do paid things. Why sho

You are trying to make the inferior performance of Android product integration a flex. Yes - I get Apple to provide a functioning integrated system. I have things to do that I am paid for, and those things work so much better with an integrated system that I do not have to futz with while unpaid, simply to make them integrate after a fashion. Just getting a computing device to function is so early 1990's.

And my familiarity with UNIX and its close brother Linux - well, I don't know about sleeping better

      • I own several Apple products and wouldn’t take one of these if it were free. This is for the sort of people who would buy a Gucci bag or something like that instead of this. The people who bought this are the people who only bought an iPhone for the same reason: it's a status symbol.

Whether you prefer a quiet pickpocket job, a snip-and-go or. London-style drive-by snatch, I'm sure the easy-steal Apple sock will be a seasonal hit among thieves this year.

    • Doubt it. These "socks" are ultimately a knitted loop which will be during use looped around all sorts of things, shoulders, handbags, etc. It is far easier to snatch a phone from someone's hand than it is to snatch a bag that is has a strap connected to something. Also being fabric they aren't stiff they would be harder to pickpocket than say an open handbag.

That said I see a rise of knife assisted theft in the future. Going up behind someone and quickly using a knife to cut through straps. It's already a

Huh? Or maybe a follow up story on one we mocked only 2 days ago is the perfect Slashdot interest story. I mean even if Slashdot were 100% non-profit and took no advertising dollars I would have expected to read about this here.

      • It's not about the article itself. It's about the way it was worded - "no reason left not to buy". It was clearly an advertising move, promoting a silly but overpriced and useless gadget.

        • Oh so Slashdot should change the text in the articles so you don't think it is on the take? If you wanted to talk about the article (on an Apple only reporting site) then talk about the article. You're the one who claimed "Apple have Slashdot in their advertising pocket"

Now that I realise what you're taking about your post looks even dumber than it did before.

    • "They have absolutely exceeded our estimated market demand, and for that we apologise."

*turns to marketing guy and whispers* "Fire whomever only produced 8 of these, and make sure we make 8 more."

    • Of course, whether they made 80,000 of them - or just 8 - is not something they're gonna tell us.

You are right about that. As well, they only released them in certain markets where they figured out the demographics. In the world at large, they'd not be so successful. We live in a world where a few people think the iSock is a good idea. Probably the same demographic that believe the new Jaguar commercial people are cool. I suppose if they think the iSock is cool and want to spend the money they can. I suspect they might also have problems with financial savvy, but that's another story.

I'm assuming you're just being sarcastic, but there's probably a bunch of 'em on eBay. I'll go look and... oh, that's unfortunate.

I think I'm going to go with what 93 Escort Wagon said earlier - they made 8 of the damn things, and all of them ended up on eBay for some insanely inflated price.

  • They wouldn't have made very many of these so they could advertise they sold out.

The purpose of this is to get you angry at excess spending by idiots. Then you engage and become aware.

This is a marketing campaign and I'm participating in it and if you're reading this you're participating in it too.

People are only annoyed because this is Apple.

If a clothing brand like Ann Taylor made an ugly $250 phone purse nobody here would bat an eye.

  • Rich people that have money to burn, Suckers.
  • Much bigger, useful at the beach, and at $150, less expensive!

Let's see, what else can I come up with to sell?

  • I have no plans to buy the iPhone product but I can understand an exuberant price for a fashion accessory designed by a legendary designer and made in limited numbers. The same can be said for a myriad of fashion accessories. If that is how you want to spend your money, then go for it. I will spend my money on electronics instead. It is all a waste of money for anything beyond food, shelter, healthcare and other necessities of life.
  • They probably did their research, for what people would pay, especially taking into account crazy fashion choices and the FOMO factor.

  • I doubt there is any defensible intellectual property here. The fast fashion accessories business should have no problem dropping the price to 1/10 of Apple's price and have them in time for Christmas.

  • Let me guess, this story was submitted by Apple's marketing department?
