Cyberpunk 2077 Players Protest Reddit By Posting Nudes (kotaku.com) 52

Open-world sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077's biggest subreddit recently switched to NSFW (not safe for work,) with the explanation that the game it is focused on is a mature game filled with nudity and gore. However, Reddit allegedly demanded that mods of the subreddit quickly revert the change. From a report: The mods aren't complying and users are now posting nude images of in-game characters as part of a protest to show why the subreddit deserves to be NSFW. Since May, Reddit has been at war with its users and subreddits as the company clamps down on third-party apps and their ability to access the site's backend or API. It's not gone well for Reddit, leading to popular subreddits like r/bestof, r/sports, and r/music going dark. And as part of this ongoing backlash, some subreddits switched to NSFW. This designation is reserved mainly for porn-y subreddits and blocks ads from appearing, but also lets users freely post nudity and more adult content.

Some mods and subreddits have used this designation to punch back at Reddit and its despised CEO. Now the Cyberpunk 2077 subreddit has seemingly wandered into this mess. According to a post from July 5 by moderator Tabnam, the decision to make the Cyberpunk 2077 subreddit NSFW was made because the game is "an 18+ game" and happened now because the mods had "never thought to change it until recently." Tabnam added that this subreddit should have already been NSFW. This decision apparently didn't go over well with Reddit.

Oh, that's a relief. From the title, I thought the players were posting nudes *shudder*.

Cyberpunk 2077 as a game is rated for adults for a reason. The subreddit being marked as NSFW is not exactly a stretch of the rules. This is not like Animal Crossing (rated for everyone) subreddit switching to NSFW. Is Grand Theft Auto rated also as NSFW and would Reddit management protest that categorization also?

What makes this even stranger is that while they are reversing this subreddit, which as you point out is reasonable to make NSFW, they are leaving some programming related subreddits as NSFW despite there never being anything remotely unsafe there.

      What does Reddit management want?

      More money.

To get it they are willing to claim ownership of user posted content, kick blind people off the platform, and violate California law where they are HQ'ed

Forcing subreddits to disallow subject matter the sub was created for and is named directly after isn't a surprise.

All it took was a single API user to piss in the CEOs cheerios and Huffman has been in pure seeing red road rage mode ever since.
He's behaving like a rabbit animal in response and blinded in his focus to "get em", without any care who or what around him is harmed.
Be that 3rd party clients using the API being removed and destroyed, all the mods and users being attacked, or the very existence of his company or site.

While writing my post, I wondered why exaggerated violence and gorefests are considered SFW, while two people rubbing against each other is NSFW. Most likely, this is a cultural opinion, where violent themes are somehow less concerning than sex themes.

This is not like Animal Crossing (rated for everyone) subreddit switching to NSFW.

This is a valid objection. However, it could be forced if users constantly posted properly tagged NSFW posts, thus requiring the mods to react in response to the users. After a

      • I asked Dall—E to make a picture of “Darth Vader making love to Amidala”.

        It refused

Then I asked it to “Draw a picture of Darth Vader eating a kitten for breakfast using his light saber as a knife”

I got a rather interesting picture back.

If eating kittens alive and is nit SFW and rubbing up the princess is not I can’t help the Americans anymore.

Grand Theft Auto rated also as NSFW

      No shit- this is insane.
Those two games are very NSFW, lol.
I'm amazed the subreddit wasn't marked as such earlier. I had assumed it was.
What a weird fucking hill for Reddit Corp to try to take.

Cyberpunk 2077 has an ESRB-M and PEGI-18 rating, like games like Call of Duty and pretty much every game where you shoot people. In practice, this game is available to everyone. It is targeted at young adults, but nothing too outlandish for a teen. It is a mainstream game, they can't go too far or it would hurt their sales, and considering the budget, they can't afford it.

Real "adult only" games are usually not available in big box stores, and on online stores that accept them, they usually require an age v

By game rated for adults, I do not mean porn. These are age restricted games and generally age restricted games should not be discussed with children. Thus NSFW should apply.

It is targeted at young adults, but nothing too outlandish for a teen.

And by definition of those ratings, only 17 year olds or older can buy ESRB-M in the US with the age being 18 in the UK. They cannot be purchased by all teens.

Almost all the posts to the subreddit are SFW. Individual posts can be marked NSFW rather than the whole subreddit. For the people that want it, there's another one called Cyberpunk2077NSFW

Where do you see them writing that they aren't protesting? People can have more than one motive at a time. It doesn't look like they're saying we are not protesting, in the announcement post they make it clear they're acting for both reasons.

They are protesting and were clear about it. Just look at the titles of the various admin posts. It absolutely started as part of the protest, they openly declared it.

They are also fixing a known oversight. The game is rated M (17+) by ESRB for nudity, strong sexual content, use of drugs, blood and gore, all categories that get NSFW tags on Reddit. It should have been tagged, but wasn't. That's a second motive. It doesn't mean the first motive is invalid, and the first motive doesn't invalidate this one. Both motives support the NSFW marker.

Once they got involved in the protest, because "the Reddit admins have threatened us", they're openly in protest and not going to switch back. They're also providing a canary. That is, the moderators declared that they wouldn't remove it; if the flag gets removed people will know Reddit modified it against the community's wishes. What started as two good reasons grew an additional good reason, it now also indicates a loss of community control.

    • So, Huffman, how's that whole "this will pass" [slashdot.org] thing going?

Sounds like it's going really well if the most dramatic story of the day is a subreddit of a game that was borderline universally hated at launch. The stories are getting about less and less popular subs every day because ... it is passing.

All my subs are back up, it's like nothing has even changed.

        WHERE IS MY LAWSUIT!!!!
      • TBH with things like this there is always a very public burst that's followed by a sinkhole opening up. The rot is under the surface. Look at Digg: they did a big change, and the stats actually looked fine... till they didn't (it took much longer than people remember). They lost a lot of superusers who made the site worth visiting for typical people. Not all of them at first, but once a bunch were gone the site's quality slipped just enough to demotivate other superusers. In this case, they eliminated the
  • I've been viewing that sub and there are really a lot of dumb users that seem to think that if a forum is discussing something that has NSFW portions, then that makes that forum NSFW. The game and discussion of the game is mostly SFW.

To make matters worse, there's a "Cyberpunk 2077" and a "Cyberpunk 2077 NSFW" sub already in existence for a long time so there was already a pretty clear separation

...when you depend on that earth to provide your revenue. Apparently the Reddit CEO does not understand that. Time for the board to step in and fire him. At this time they cannot undo the damage this idiot did, but they can still limit it.

Scortched Earth is always a desperation ploy. The idea is to deprive the enemy of any profit from capturing your territory. As in "Why should my crops feed his army?".

    • At this time they cannot undo the damage this idiot did

And what damage is that? Most of reddit is back open. They suffered a brief 6% dip in traffic. Aside from a bit of reputational damage that will blow over as this intangible shit always does Reddit is very much the same now as it was a few months ago, except for a couple of lesser known subs still being dragged around in the news.

You are massively overestimating the impact of what just happened here. A shakespeare quote is in order (because it's the only one I remember from school) "full of sound and fury s

  • It's OK to show blood and gore, and a single person wracking up a body count into the hundereds or thousands, but better not let him be a potty mouth and he better keep his pants on. Such a strange system of moral values.
