Adobe's New Prototype Generative AI Tool Is the 'Photoshop' of Music-Making and Editing (theverge.com) 51

Adobe has announced a new prototype tool called Project Music GenAI Control that allows users to create original music by inputting text prompts, then edit the audio without switching to separate software. Users can specify musical styles in their prompts to produce tracks like "happy dance" or "sad jazz."

Adobe says integrated editing controls let users tweak patterns, tempo, intensity and structure of the AI-generated music. Sections can be remixed and looped as backing tracks or background music. The tool can also adjust audio "based on a reference melody" and extend clip length for set animations or podcasts. Details on editing interface and upload options for custom reference tracks are unclear.

    • ...and a massive overstatement. "Boring" might be true, "music" definitely (as in "by definition" or "literally") not. Lack of imagination wouldn't be that bad there's a lot of music without much of it. Lack of even any theoretical emotion is the killer factor, Music is one of the fine arts and you have to be sentient to create it, If you doubt that, feel free to get a place in the line before the "complaints about Plato / culture / the universe" sign.

I hope it does better than the AI generated Japanese techno pop crap my teen listens to.

Just because it was AI made doesn't mean it's any good.

    • Have fun hoping. They said it "makes music"; they didn't say it "makes good music". They didn't even say it "make music good". I hope they studied Randy's Marsh's musical procedures in Southpark when he created all those Lorde songs, because THAT's how to make music good.

    • It will probably work "good enough" from the very start to displace folks doing it professionally by hand. Just like Midjourney is doing to art, AI will do the same to music, most likely. Eventually, actors and movies are next (I give it 3 years). I guess to survive as a young person planning a career you'll want to do a job that requires a lot of different activities and tools. Handyman might be the most secure job on Earth after AI.
    • Ah yes, kids these days listen to bad music. Not like in my day when we had genuine classics like "Ice Ice Baby" and, er, Limp Bizkit too. Maybe if those weren't your jam you preferred the insufferably bland like Millenium or something.

      • The music I listened to was made by human beings and had some life and soul in it. Like anything else it was a mixed bag but there were always a number of songs on an album where you could feel the artist's life blood invested in it.

Or beep bop boop AI made techno pop.

I'll take the mixed bag from any genre over AI made music any day.

          Sure.

In other news old fart thinks kids these days listen to bad music, man bites dog and weather, that's also happening right now in a city near you.

          • Hi idiot, I listen to current modern music as well. I'm sorry you're stuck in a meme based NPC doom thought bubble. We don't all live there with you.

Tell us what modern music you're listening to this week that makes you so edgy and current.

            This'll be good.

            • I listen to current modern music as well.

Ah but not what the kids listen to because kids of course listen to crap, not like their parents whi have excellent taste.

The great thing about right-wing insults is that only other right wingers know what you mean. It's kind of ineffective to use in-group meme phrases like "MPC" or whatever, but you do you.

              lol, ye

              • Lmao, way to stand up like a big man and get knocked down like a little boy.

You're so stunning and brave! And failed.

                • Well, posting nonsensical insults and then declaring victory is certainly a tactic. Never occurred to me, but I suppose you have to be way smarter to think of it, lol!

                  • Whatever dude, you stepped up for no reason and got slapped down. Take the L. I'm done here. Enjoy your weekend.

                    • and got slapped down.

If by "slapped down" you mean "mildly baffled by insults that make sense only to you" then sure. At this point I don't actually know which part of your post is supposed to be the cutting insult you seem to think it is, because from someone not versed in the lingo of "MPC" or whatever, it's actually quite unclear.

  • When reading any generative AI story I can't help but think of it as yet another dive to achieve total mediocrity. Instead of trying to get people to be creative thinkers, let's train them to produce dross.
    • An opposite point of view (mine):
I have zero artistic talent. I've tried for decades, music, writing, painting. I am terrible at all of them. I have a lot of ideas for things I'd like to hear or see, so this sort of program will help me realize these dreams.

I'm all for tools that help people achieve their own visions for creative output. What I'm not for is these generative bland same-same things that don't really do much more than take, "Make me a song that sounds like a cloud" and churn out some milquetoast electronica or something.

I unfortunately have the practice from a very young age at doing a lot of artistic things, but don't have the time to do full production on most of my ideas. If I could get a tool that takes my demo and polishes it, that would be

      • I'll bite. You dreampt of typing a few words into a program? which would ... what?... make you an artist?
Not being snarky here, why don't you buy a starter water colour or acrylic art kit? or a low end synthesizer keyboard.. they are TONs of fun. You should try that. Then you'd be *doing* something, instead of the AI *doing* it.
So you "have no talent". That's not how art works. Talent is bullshit. Hard work and hands on is how you become "talented".

You're not being snarky, you're willfully ignoring what the GP said.

I'm largely aphantasic. I don't picture things. That means I'll always be handicapped when producing art the old fashioned way. But with AI art I can ask for something I've imagined, then start messing with it until I get what I want. It doesn't matter that I can't picture it, I can still make a pict

          • You aren't *making* anything. The program is making it. You're just typing.
Now, let me ignore what you said and get ableist on your dumb ass now.

            1. what? you're the champion of anyone who says I have a thing? Joe can't talk for himself?
            2. You're "largely aphantasic"? What about the rest of the time, maybe you can picture things in low resolution? or maybe just part of a thing?
            3. You have eyes and hands, I'm guessing. Could you not draw something then look at the picture?
            4. Can you prove you're "largely aph
            • Oh look, more arrogance from the ableist gallery that's sure they know better than me what my situation is. What an ass clown you are.

      • Hate to say so, but if your results are shitty because of lack of talent then your ideas (or designs) will be just as crappy at close look. Because these ideas are what "talent" is, the rest is just craftmanship.
  • Seems like we've gone a long way since Microsoft Songsmith. However, music is more than just about sounding good. It's about a celebration of skill, about communication and a way to communion. If a song distills to a prompt, we're loosing so much expressive space.

This tech is cool, but it seems like it's tackling a problem that doesn't exist. What's next? Using GPT to generate a long prompt for this to generate music? At this point we might as well also design a bot to do painting by number.

...it's not very different from the way pop music is made
Mercenary pop is not designed by creative artists, it's designed by teams of experts who study the existing popular music, kinda like training an AI
Then they determine what standard form is currently popular and adjust their product enough to make it sound a bit different, but not too much so that it becomes unfamiliar
All of this can be done by AI, faster and cheaper
AI could never invent a Frank Zappa

It's not just pop music. Pop "creative" output is all that way. Look at Hollywood movies. They all feel the same because they're designed based on whatever's already worked. It brings us to boring bland nothing, but it's boring bland nothing than sells. Design by committee, essentially. Bleed all creativity out, make sure it's hitting the right current message, and go.

      • Maximize return on investment by erecting guardrails to insure against catastrophic failure. The music business is a business like any other, big music being big business.

I'm just saddened by the number of brilliant creators that get sucked in by the dream of "making it" and then either get ruined by holding their ground, or get steamrolled into putting out non-creative dreck. That's across the board, writers, musicians, artists, you name it.

      This.

Even when someone who previously wrote original music gets popular, it tends to get more and more generic, think along the lines of Rosalia, KarolG and even Shakira (she was better when she was a brunette). OK 3 Spanish examples but honestly the English world has been dreck for so long I know more about Spanish/Latino popular music.

You're 100% correct that AI could never create a Frank Zappa... or even something like the Supremes or Beetles (which were not exactly genre breaking at the time, but

  • Like if I type some lyrics and choose a voice/style .. how soon will it be that I can set that to the music? Also it should allow me to make adjustments to the expressions/vowels and things like that.

And of course an accompanying music video complete with dancers and maybe some scenes relevant to the song lyrics would be cool.

  • AI cannot convey feelings. Doesn't feel anything. It's dead. If Adobe trains it with only the very best music, the best quality we can ever hope for is the sound of a student.
  • Wish there were mature tools for upscaling from low sample rates that could add in those missing high frequencies. Also, that apps like Moises could separating noise as well as instruments.
  • Adobe's new tool also can smoke spliffs in nightclubs and play the sax

    Learn to work the saxophone

Drink Scotch whiskey all night long

  • Another useless toy to generate random noise that follows certain rules of composition and will be able to filter out the few notes per octave that do not fit into the actual key. You don't need "AI" for this kind of carnival magic, you don't even need a computer for that, The rules are 100-500 years old for western classical music, a lot older for Indian and some other asian classics. You could build a mechanical device that does the job or employ someone without the slightest understanding of music to cre

"...There was a whole chain of separate departments dealing with proletarian literature, music, drama, and entertainment generally. Here were produced rubbishy newspapers containing almost nothing except sport, crime and astrology, sensational five-cent novelettes, films oozing with sex, and sentimental songs which were composed entirely by mechanical means on a special kind of kaleidoscope known as a versificator."
