Huawei's Flagship Mate 30 Pro Has Impressive Specs But No Google (theverge.com) 58

The Mate 30 series of smartphones from Huawei is now official, starting with the Mate 30 Pro and the Mate 30. From a report: The announcement of Mate 30 series comes at a difficult time for Huawei, whose presence on the USA's entity list prevents US companies from doing business with the Chinese firm. Google said last month that these phones won't ship with Google's apps and services, nor will they come with the Play Store pre-installed, which is how most Android users outside of China download their apps. Huawei's response to the problem has been to nurture its own ecosystem of apps that are available through the Huawei App Gallery. The company announced that rather than shipping with Google's services pre-installed, the Mate 30 Series would instead ship with the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) Core, which it claims is already integrated with over 45,000 apps. The company announced that it was investing $1 billion into its software ecosystem with an investment that would be split across a development fund, a user growth fund, and a marketing fund. Here's what happens when you attempt to sideload an app developed by Google.

I'm glad we have a choice. Surveillance by google, or surveillance by the Chinese government (who probably don't care what I do, as long as I don't mouth off about the Chinese government).

    • or surveillance by the Chinese government (who probably don't care what I do, as long as I don't mouth off about the Chinese government).

Actually, the Chinese government cares deeply about you if you have access to a business computer network. Don't forget, China is stealing IP as fast as they can. Would you really want to trust a company lead by someone that has deep ties in the CCP?

    • At least with Huawei youâ(TM)ve got the government running the second largest economy in the world paying you a bribe/subsidy for your complicity. At least Chinese espionage serves a purpose (advancement of military power) rather than just making brats in Silicon Valley richer.
    • I've sent plenty of anti-google sentiment through my gmail account and they have yet to send goons after me.
  • Clearly that's a feature

    • I used to think the world would be better if Google died, but actually I expect whatever will replace it will be somewhat worse.
  • No Google is a nice feature, but it has no hardware keyboard and I already preordered my F(x)tec Pro1.

    • It has no Google and you have to sideload popular software like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. I am sure it will not sell well in the country I am in where 98% of mobile phones have WhatsApp installed. Heck, I was waiting for the cashier in a supermarket and saw a message to use WhatsApp in order to report if the queue is too long.
      • Personally I've never seen a phone preloaded with Whatsapp, or heard of one until now, and I also live in an area where its (unfortunately) ubiquitous.

"Sideloading" becomes as easy as using the Google Play store if you first sideload an unofficial Google play store substitute such as the Aurora store...

      • So we don't need to delete or disable those apps on a new phone. More good news.

  • At least there is a slight hope that it's Five Eyes state terror free.

  • Not shipping with spyoogle is awesome, download apks. directly. Of course, Chinese overlords are no better, lineage is the way to go.

it is not just that there is no google, the device doesn't even allow you to install google if you wanted to.

Finally android users have a choice to not have Google installed by default. FU Google!
  • I would be surprised if finding malware and backdoors in the apps in the Huawei Mobile Services store wasn't par for the course. If I could load the phone with crap from the google Play store it *might* be marginally better but I don't think that's an option.

I like how people in DC are talking about charging Google execs with treason for enabling the Chinese military while Other-Google bans their Play/apps from Huawei's phones because they may be subject to State control (like every single corporation in China).

Meanwhile people here are applauding a "Google-free" Android phone. Android which is made by Google.

    Talk about Clown World...

  • Unless the phone was sold by mobile service providers, most Chinese phones always needed to be flushed by a global ROM. Either by you or the reseller.
  • Also who in the West in their right mind would buy any product from Huawei? Why not just skip the intermediate steps and have a GPS tracker implanted on your body, and carry a satellite transmitter with a camera and microphone connected to it, then write daily summaries of all your activities and conversations and mail it off to the Chinese government directly?
Now some smartass will make comments about Google/Facebook/Amazon/U.S. Government/etc
So what? Does that make them better or acceptable somehow?

You mean buy a phone that HAS Google?

      • Don't have a smartphone at all. Get a cheap disposable dumbphone. It's not that hard, I don't have a smartphone and it's fine.
    • >So what?

At least for the foreseeable future, the Chinese government is going to have very little influence on my life, regardless of how much information it collects. That's the difference. I already have a Huawei phone. I would prefer to have a Huawei phone minus Google. I would like to have a phone that was entirely trustworthy, but there's no incentive for anyone to make one. All you can do is mitigate the risk.

      • 'Mitigate the risk' by getting rid of your smartphone entirely and use a cheap dumbphone instead, it's not that difficult.
  • The most impressive specs are the built in surveillance tools in their closed source firmware. You can get high speed linking direct to your social credit score! So wonderful...

  • If you are not a government employee or in a sensitive industry you are probably better off having foreign entity (in this case Chinese) watching rather than your own. They won't serve you ads (yet) or prosecute you for viewing/saying the wrong things in your own country.
  • Just use Aptoide to download apps

Sorry, but from where I stand, No Google is an impressive spec. Very impressive. Now, let's get busy filling in the cracks where Google used to be, with something more open and less... well... fucked up. That is, fucked up by oversexed interns, who are the only ones who ever do any work at Google because being a tenured Googler is only about one thing: rest and vest.
