Google Launches Braille Keyboard for Android Devices (venturebeat.com) 4

Google today announced the launch of a virtual braille keyboard for Android that's designed to enable those with low vision or blindness to type on their phones without additional hardware. From a report: The tech giant says it collaborated with braille developers and users to create it, and to ensure it can be used anywhere a user would normally type -- including social media, text messaging, and email apps. According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.2 billion people globally have a vision impairment or blindness. To address their needs, Google previously developed and released BrailleBack, an accessibility service for Android that helps users make use of braille devices, but BrailleBack didn't offer on-screen typing.

  • For everyone who hasnâ(TM)t got needle-tip fingers to type on "keys", a quarter (0.5x0.5) of the size of his fingers, and who doesn't want to correct some psycho from Silicon Valley all the time because he is guessing the wrong "most likely" words based on the dumbest common denominator.

I still prefer a keyboard though.
(No, a touch screen is not a keyboard. Ceci n'est pas un clavier!)

  • This is great news for people who want to use Braille input on androiad devices, but old news for iOS. Apple added Braille Screen Input with iOS 8 in 2014. I hope that Android's implementation of this will work as well as Apple's offering. I know blind people who can enter text quickly with Brialle screen input on iPhones and iPads.
