Despite Disappointing Pixel 4, 2019 Was Google's Best Year for Phone Sales Yet (androidauthority.com) 15

A few weeks ago, news broke that Google was allegedly disappointed with the Google Pixel 4, even prior to that device's launch. However disappointing it may have been, it doesn't appear to have stopped Google Pixel sales from hitting a record high in 2019. From a report: According to third-party analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Google Pixel sales hit 7.2 million units in 2019. Although the numbers don't get broken down by device, it's likely most of those sales come from the two 2019 phones launched -- the Google Pixel 3a and Google Pixel 4. At least some of the shipments are probably made up of Google Pixel 3 sales, too. However, it's estimated that the Google Pixel 4 only sold around 2 million units over its first six months, which would mean a portion of that number wouldn't count towards the 2019 total. Therefore, it's basically a guarantee that the bulk of the Google Pixel sales in 2019 came from the Pixel 3a line.

Smart phones are getting massive, and the 3a is a good phone in a handy size. Very surprised with what I ended up with for the price. Battery has been better than any other smart phone I have owned. Not an iPhone person, so I really can't compare it to one of those.
    • If nothing else, the 3a proved to me that I can't notice any difference between top end and more midrange processors. I'll never buy another flagship phone.

    • And for those of us who like a larger phone, the Pixel 3a XL is also a great value. It has an excellent camera too, that works very well in low light, unlike every other phone and even stand-alone camera I have ever had.
Unless you're a hardcore phone gamer, or can't be bothered with a headphone to USB-C adapter, it's perfect.

    • I get to play with a lot of different phones at work because we develop various mobile apps, and I have to say the Pixel 3a is my favorite phone. Pretty decent form factor, well designed, nice screen, and seems to work reasonably well. The Pixel 4 doesn't seem like a bad phone either, though that's only if you aren't the one buying it. If you are, I see very little the Pixel 4 offers over the Pixel 3a for the significant price increase, and you lose things like the headphone jack.

      I've also played a lot w

Return to the Nexus form factor and I'll go back to buying a new phone every year.

I can hold on to hope this is why 3a sold so well and Google will wake up and produce phone form factors again.

I will not continue to drop loads of money on phablets that I don't want.

The 3a sold well because it was the right price, the best camera and software, and because the 4 was such a massive disappointment.

  • I've seen them on sale for sub $300. Buddy of mine who bought the last one at launch was mad to see it go down $200 in a couple weeks.
  • 1. Pixel phones are high-end phones with no bloatware. For someone sick of Samsung bloatware, there are no other Android phones as far as I am concerned. There's Pixel, then there's garbage.

    2. The biggest competition to the Pixel 4 was the Pixel 3, which was 1/3rd the price. Phones have gotten too expensive, and there is little incentive to upgrade. People are skipping a cycle or 2 now. The Pixel 4 isn't so much a failure, as it was not a big enough upgrade cycle and yet another overpriced high-end pho

  • ...if they would fix their order fulfillment [reddit.com], trade-in [reddit.com], and warranty [reddit.com] issues.

There's at least one of these threads per week. A reminder to never order direct through google.

Also, don't chargeback [reddit.com], they will shut down your google account.

So (1) don't order from Google, (2) don't try to do a trade-in, and (3) hope your phone never needs warranty service. I'm on my 4th Google-branded phone since 2012 and never had a problem so my experience has been good, but YMMV.

  • Hope they learn, and go back to their old Nexus ways of producing "good enough" phones at reasonable prices.

I have an aging Pixel 2XL. If the Pixel 5 ends up being an upper-mid range, ~$650-ish device I'm in. If not I'm heading over to another brand, for the first time in 10 years of Android devices.

It's a naive, domestic operating system without any breeding, but I think you'll be amused by its presumption.
